Graymere Manor
Graymere Manor stands at the edge of a wooded river valley, behind rusted iron gates and a long drive choked with weeds. The three-story mansion is grand in scale, with twin stair towers, a broad central facade, and a covered entrance supported by fluted stone columns. Its roof sags in places, ivy has forced its way into the western walls, and several windows are boarded over. Inside, faded carpets, dust-coated furniture, and peeling family portraits preserve the remains of a wealthy household that vanished from local life almost overnight.

Graymere Manor
The manor feels grand enough to remember its former importance but too tired to maintain the illusion. Wind moves through cracked window frames, old portraits watch from smoke-darkened walls, and rainwater stains spread across ceilings in branching patterns. The house is quiet during the day except for settling wood and distant knocks. At night, footsteps often cross the upper halls, though no servant admits to hearing them.

Cultured, anxious, and eager to appear more confident than he feels. Edric is generous when praised, defensive when challenged, and genuinely desperate to restore the manor before his creditors seize it. He will hire capable adventurers to investigate strange events, but he may conceal evidence that could damage his claim to the Graymere estate.
History
Floor Plan and Key Areas
The manor is divided into three main wings. The east wing contains formal parlors, a dining hall, and a shuttered ballroom. The west wing holds kitchens, servants’ quarters, storage rooms, and a covered carriage passage. The central house contains the family rooms, a grand stair, and a glass-roofed winter garden. Several upper rooms are locked or unsafe, including the old nursery and the late lord’s study.
Estate Grounds
The manor’s grounds include a walled kitchen garden, a neglected orchard, a dry fountain court, and a stable block with room for eight horses. A sunken path leads from the orchard to a ruined summerhouse overlooking the river. The grounds are overgrown but still show signs of careful design, with yew hedges, stone benches, and a half-collapsed maze.
Household and Servants
The manor employs a small household staff, including a housekeeper, cook, groundskeeper, two maids, and a stablehand. They are loyal to one another rather than to the current owner, and they know which doors stick, which floors creak, and where old valuables were hidden during the family’s decline. The staff will quietly aid respectful adventurers but resist anyone who threatens the house or its secrets.
Adventure Use
The mansion is suitable for a short investigation or a dangerous social encounter. Its weathered rooms provide cover, concealment, and multiple routes between floors. At party level 5, likely threats include animated household objects, desperate burglars, a protective ghost, or a hidden cult using the abandoned wine cellar. The manor works best as a location where exploration and conversation gradually reveal a serious danger.

A sharp-eyed woman in her early forties who dresses plainly and keeps the household functioning through strict routines. She believes the manor is dangerous but insists that it can be saved. She knows the location of hidden passages and has seen the ghost of Otho Graymere near the old study.
A broad-shouldered former soldier with a stiff left leg and a talent for repairing nearly anything made of wood or iron. He distrusts nobles, adventurers, and anyone who asks about the cellar. He secretly keeps watch over the estate at night.
A polished, soft-spoken antiquarian who purchased the manor with borrowed money. He claims to be interested in restoring his family’s reputation, but he is obsessed with finding a missing Graymere ledger. He is brave when prepared and evasive when questioned about the séance.
The spectral remnant of Otho Graymere, appearing as a gaunt man in a rain-soaked formal coat. He cannot leave the manor and attacks only those who attempt to open the sealed cellar or destroy the family records. If spoken to calmly, he reveals that something beneath the house answered the séance.
A nervous young woman who has been hiding in the abandoned nursery for several weeks. She came to steal documents from the study but discovered that someone else is using the cellar. She knows a secret route into the house from the orchard.
Rumors & Plot Hooks
- 1.The bell in the east tower rings on nights when someone in the house is about to die.
- 2.The Graymeres hid a fortune in silver beneath the manor, but every thief who found it was later discovered wandering in the orchard with no memory of the previous night.
- 3.A child’s voice can sometimes be heard counting backward from thirteen in the old nursery.
- 4.The sealed wine cellar contains the remains of a forbidden family chapel, not wine.
- 5.The current owner is not the true heir. He purchased the manor from a dying relative who had no legal right to sell it.
- 6.A black carriage has been seen waiting beyond the gates during storms, though no horse tracks lead to or from it.
Classified Entry
The séance did not summon Otho Graymere. It opened a temporary passage into the Shadowfell beneath the wine cellar, allowing a hungry entity called the Drowned Guest to enter the manor. Otho discovered the breach and sealed himself inside the cellar with it, but the seal has weakened. The entity now influences dreams, alters memories, and uses reflections in dark windows to observe the living. Edric Vale knows part of the truth because the missing Graymere ledger contains instructions for renewing the seal. He has not told anyone that several pages are already missing.
