Ravenbrook Keep
Ravenbrook Keep stands beside a shallow black-water brook on a raised patch of ground surrounded by wind-bent grain. Its walls are cleanly repaired, its roof tiles are regularly replaced, and its iron fittings receive constant care. Four weathered standing stones mark the forgotten magical convergence beyond the eastern wall, their surfaces worn smooth by rain and generations of passing hands. A raven carved above the gate gives the keep its name, though living ravens gather there in unusual numbers. The keep is modest rather than imposing, with enough room for a small garrison, a few travelers, a stable, and the officers responsible for protecting this stretch of the Jorthiel leyline road.

Ravenbrook Keep
Ravenbrook Keep feels orderly, guarded, and quietly uneasy. Wind combs through the grain beyond the walls, carrying the dry rasp of stalks against one another. The brook murmurs below the road, while the standing stones give off a faint mineral scent after sunset. Inside, boot leather, lamp smoke, and iron polish mingle in the corridors. Soldiers speak in low voices whenever the leyline stirs, and the ravens nesting in the parapets often fall silent at the same time.

History
Leyline Road and Duties
Ravenbrook Keep guards a crossroads where two old roads meet beside a shallow, reed-choked brook. The leyline road carries grain wagons, pike patrols, hedge mages, and merchants traveling between Jorthiel’s eastern duchies. The keep’s garrison offers shelter to licensed travelers, but every visitor is questioned about their destination and business. During leyline surges, the road stones hum beneath wagon wheels and faint blue light gathers in the standing stones.
Garrison and Defenses
The keep maintains a small garrison of twelve soldiers, led by a sergeant and supported by a rotating squad from the nearest Jorthiel duchy. Its defenses include a stout gatehouse, a raised drawbridge, two watch platforms, murder holes above the entry passage, and signal braziers visible from the road. The walls are too low to withstand a serious siege, but they are well suited to deterring bandits, smugglers, and small raiding parties.
The Ravenbrook Marker
Beneath the old chapel lies a sealed stone chamber containing a cracked standing-stone fragment known as the Ravenbrook Marker. It was once part of the forgotten convergence beneath the fields. The fragment is kept under iron bars and warding chalk. It occasionally whispers in the voices of people who have died along the road, especially during storms or eclipses.
Services for Travelers
Travelers may rent a pallet in the keep’s barracks loft, stable a mount, purchase simple meals, and seek directions from the gate clerk. The keep accepts Jorthiel coin, trade bars, and sealed letters of passage. A small room called the Road Office contains maps, patrol logs, missing-person notices, and reports concerning suspicious activity along the leyline road.

A broad-shouldered veteran with cropped gray hair, a weathered face, and a habit of polishing her shield while listening. She keeps the garrison disciplined without cruelty and has served Ravenbrook for eleven years. Mara trusts evidence, dislikes noble interference, and is increasingly worried that someone inside the keep is altering patrol records.
A young human clerk with ink-stained fingers, round spectacles, and an exceptional memory for names and dates. Oren manages travel permits and patrol reports. He is eager to prove himself to the Jorthiel authorities, but he has begun copying certain documents before filing them, fearing they may disappear.
A half-elf scout with a green wool cloak, a scar across one cheek, and a sharp-eyed raven named Ash perched near her whenever possible. Tessa patrols the standing stones and surrounding fields. She claims the stones have shifted slightly during the last three nights, though no one else has noticed.
A quiet human priest who tends the small chapel and treats injured travelers with poultices, clean bandages, and stern advice. Brother Halden is loyal to the ideals of lawful protection, but he has hidden his concern that the sealed chamber beneath the chapel is becoming warmer each night.

Classified Entry
A covert Obsidian Tribunal cell has infiltrated Ravenbrook Keep through a trusted traveling magistrate’s clerk. The cell is not yet strong enough to seize the keep, but it has been using the Ravenbrook Marker to identify condemned souls and test whether the old convergence can power a small soul-binding rite. The altered patrol records conceal nighttime meetings at the standing stones. If the rite succeeds, the keep’s signal brazier will burn black, marking the site for a larger Tribunal operation.
