The tower chamber at the summit contains the great telescope beneath a retractable copper dome. A narrow maintenance stair leads into the roof mechanism and a sealed chamber below the foundations.
The Great Telescope
The great telescope can still track the night sky if its lenses are cleaned and its counterweights are reset. Characters proficient with Arcana, Investigation, or the relevant artisan's tools can repair the mechanism with time and suitable materials. Once restored, the telescope reveals hidden celestial events, invisible creatures within the grounds, and brief visions of places connected to the haunting. The orrery can also be turned into a dangerous magical device, allowing a creature to alter the observatory's protective wards or open the sealed lower chamber.
The Nightly Haunting
The observatory's haunting follows a repeating nightly pattern. At sunset, cold lights appear in the lower windows. At midnight, ghostly astronomers climb the stairs, whispering calculations and marking positions on the walls. At the hour before dawn, the spirits gather beneath the dome and reenact the disaster that killed them. These apparitions usually ignore visitors unless someone interrupts the ritual, damages the instruments, or speaks the name of the missing astronomer, Elian Voss.
Astronomical Archives
The observatory contains a collection of star charts, eclipse records, navigational logs, and prophetic observations. Most are damaged, but a careful search can recover useful information about weather, ancient ruins, planar conjunctions, and the movements of a nearby celestial body. The restricted chart room is protected by a lingering ward that causes intruders to become briefly weightless and drift toward the ceiling. Among the records is a map showing a forgotten entrance beneath the observatory.

A living caretaker who has secretly occupied the lower floors for six months. Mara is practical, brave, and exhausted. She claims to be repairing the observatory, but she is actually studying the haunting in hopes of contacting her dead brother, who was one of the tower's former guards.
A former royal guard who died during the original disaster and now patrols the stairwell. He challenges anyone carrying a drawn weapon, demanding proof that they are not servants of the thing seen through the telescope. He may aid respectful intruders against the more violent spirits.
A pale, star-eyed spirit that appears in reflections and at the edge of the telescope's view. It never speaks directly, but it can imitate the voice of someone a character trusts. The spirit is not the source of the haunting, but it is trying to reach the sealed chamber below.

Elian Voss tried to close the window by binding the observatory's spirits into a repeating ritual. His plan partly worked, but the Watcher in Glass remained connected to the tower. Each time the telescope is used during a major alignment, the connection grows stronger. The sealed chamber beneath the foundations contains the original lens assembly and the bound spirits of the other eleven astronomers. Destroying the lens may end the haunting, but it will also release the spirits and give the Watcher a permanent path into the world.
