The Elder Crypt
The dead elders remember what the abbey chose to forget.
Beneath the abbey lies a compact crypt built for its earliest priests and elders. Its sealed vaults remain mostly undisturbed, but the dead have begun to stir around the oldest tomb, where a bitter spirit guards a secret the abbey buried generations ago.
Cold, stale air drifts down from the abbey above, carrying the faint scent of incense and wet stone. Candle stubs burn with weak blue flames in iron brackets, while distant knocks echo from within sealed sarcophagi. Dust muffles every footstep except for the occasional scrape of stone on stone.
☠ Threat
Abbot Seran Vale lingers as a weakened but cunning undead spirit within the deepest sarcophagus. He cannot yet leave the crypt, but he commands restless bones, whispers through the sealed tombs, and seeks a living body to possess. The disturbance caused by the party gives him the chance to bargain, threaten, or briefly animate the dead around him.
History
The abbey built this crypt nearly two centuries ago as a quiet resting place for its first priests, wealthy benefactors, and honored elders. Its deepest vault was reserved for Abbot Seran Vale, whose final years were hidden from the congregation after he began experimenting with rites meant to preserve the soul. The abbey sealed his tomb and quietly altered every record bearing his name.
