The Last Measure
The dead kneel because the thing below has not yet stood.
The temple descends through nine layers of sanctified crypts, abandoned barracks, sealed libraries, and sacrificial chambers. Its priests once worshiped endurance made flesh, and their final experiment still thrashes beneath the altar at the deepest point.
Cold incense, wet stone, and the copper stink of old blood fill the temple. Pale votive flames burn without fuel, while distant impacts shake dust from the ceiling and something vast occasionally drags claws across sealed doors.
☠ Threat
SCP-682 lies beneath the temple, restrained by chains made from saint-bone, meteoric iron, and preserved souls. It is not merely a monster waiting in the final chamber: its movements alter the dungeon, awaken buried dead, and teach nearby undead new tactics. If the party damages the suppression network or opens the wrong reliquary, the creature begins adapting before they reach the boss room.
History
The Temple of the Last Measure was raised by priests who believed suffering purified the soul. Beneath it, they imprisoned SCP-682, a reptilian immortal whose regenerative fury seemed to answer every theological question with violence. Over generations, the priests built libraries, shrines, and corpse-powered restraints around the prison. Their order died when the creature adapted to their final rite and turned the entire sanctuary into a mausoleum.
Encounter Table
CRA procession of robed corpses carrying extinguished candles and silently searching for living hearts.
A black-scaled undead predator assembled from temple guard remains and discarded reptilian tissue.
Floating skulls bound with silver wire, each whispering a different failed containment theory.
A huge undead priest dragging a broken restraint chain and following the pulse of SCP-682 through the walls.
Rumours & Whispers
The priests did not worship a god. They worshiped something that survived every execution.
A bell beneath the temple rings whenever a dead thing learns how to heal.
There is a vault where every weapon used against the deepest prisoner is kept, but the weapons may already know how to fight back.
A headless saint still guards the old entrance and can name the thing buried below.
The temple's dead are not defending their faith. They are trying to keep the doors closed.

Corridor Notes
Basalt walls are carved with kneeling saints whose stone eyes turn toward the nearest living creature.
Thin black water runs downhill through channels cut between flagstones. It carries flakes of bone and scraps of prayer parchment.
Bronze bells hang at irregular intervals, each wrapped in chains. They ring when undead pass nearby, but remain silent for the living.
Several walls bear fresh gouges too wide for any humanoid weapon. The marks continue across locked doors without breaking the stone.
