The Last Candle Crypt
Beneath the ruined chapel, the dead still keep the last candle burning.
The crypt lies beneath a collapsed hill chapel, its burial halls preserved by cold earth and forbidden rites. Ancient warding sigils have begun to fail, allowing restless dead and a patient wight to reclaim the halls.
Cold, stale air presses through the crypt, carrying the scents of wet limestone, old incense, and grave dust. Pale blue witchlight burns in iron sconces, while distant stone knocks, whispering prayers, and the scrape of unseen claws travel through the walls.
☠ Threat
High Priest Odran, now a calculating wight, rules the deepest chamber from a throne of mortared skulls. He sends lesser undead to test intruders, hoards the souls of the crypt's dead, and seeks living bodies for a new generation of bound guardians. The failing shrines can weaken his defenses, but destroying them recklessly may release every spirit at once.
History
The crypt was built two centuries ago by the Order of the Last Candle, a funerary brotherhood devoted to preserving the dead and guiding souls onward. During a plague, High Priest Odran sealed the chapel and began using forbidden spirit-binding rites to keep the infected corpses contained. The rites worked, but Odran became a wight and turned the crypt into his eternal domain.
Encounter Table
CRA corpse in a funerary shroud drags itself along the corridor, drawn toward the nearest living heartbeat.
A pack of pale ghouls follows the scent of blood and whispers scraps of the burial vows they once heard.
A drifting spirit carrying a dead candle moves silently through the walls and watches the party before reporting to Odran.
Animated skulls roll and leap through the passageways, clicking out warnings in a language older than the chapel.
Rumours & Whispers
The hill chapel bell rings underground whenever someone dies in the village.
A priest who died during the plague still collects offerings from the living.
Grave robbers found a room where the dead wear wax masks and count every bone.
The crypt contains a noble family's missing reliquary, but its guardian cannot cross a ring of salt.
Blue flames in the chapel are said to point toward a hidden door.
Quest Hooks
Quest giver: Mara Venn, a nervous antiquarian
Grave robbers entered the hill chapel three nights ago and never returned. Their employer wants the party to recover a family signet before the town guard discovers the expedition.
75 gp, a signed letter of introduction to a regional historian, and the recovered signet
Quest giver: Father Halric, keeper of the ruined chapel
The village dead have begun whispering the names of living children. The party must enter the crypt, learn what Odran is preparing, and stop the rite before the next new moon.
A consecrated silver weapon worth 150 gp and free healing from the chapel for one year
Quest giver: Lady Ysabet Crownhill
A noble family's ancestor was buried with a black reliquary said to contain proof of an old bloodline. The reliquary lies somewhere beyond the locked shrines.
300 gp and political favor, though the reliquary may reveal an inconvenient truth
Corridor Notes
Every third flagstone bears a worn name and date. Stepping on a grave-name causes a faint breath to fog the air beside the intruder.
Black candle stubs line the corridor, though none have wicks. When a creature passes, one candle briefly glows with corpse-blue flame.
Thin streams of embalming fluid seep from cracks and run toward the deeper rooms, leaving silver stains on the floor.
The walls contain narrow burial slots filled with skulls that turn slightly to follow moving creatures.
