The Black Ledger Crypt
Every name forgotten in the dark is written again in the Ledger of the Dead.
The crypt lies beneath a collapsed chapel, its burial halls preserved by ancient warding magic and the steady seep of groundwater. Scholars, priests, and grave robbers once came seeking forbidden names, but now the dead patrol the passages and something within the sealed barrow is learning to speak through them.
Cold, stale air creeps through the crypt, carrying the smells of wet limestone, old incense, and disturbed earth. Blue witchlight flickers in cracked funerary lamps, while distant knocks, whispering prayers, and the scrape of stone lids echo through the connected chambers.
☠ Threat
The crypt is ruled by Veyr, the Ledger Wight, an intelligent undead custodian who records every living visitor in a book of black skin. He commands lesser dead through whispered names and seeks the missing seals that restrain the death spirit within him. If the seals are restored, Veyr can be weakened, redeemed, or destroyed before the spirit escapes into the surrounding graveyard.
History
Three centuries ago, Abbess Meriel built this crypt beneath a chapel to preserve the remains of plague victims and record their names. When a dying noble called Veyr sought sanctuary, Meriel bound his soul to a warding engine beneath the barrow. The ritual failed, creating a death-haunted archive that sealed itself and slowly turned its keepers into undead servants.
