The Bound Grove Spirits
The Bound Grove Spirits began as a pact between the early settlers of Halcyon Glade and the nonhuman spirits gathered around the Eldertree. For centuries, the arrangement flourished. The spirits guarded the roads, warned of war, and taught the first moonwell keepers how to draw healing water without damaging the wells. In return, mortals planted groves, buried their dead beneath living roots, and treated the Eldertree as a sovereign presence rather than a resource. The first major fracture came when the glade's rulers attempted to claim the tree and its wells as royal property. The spirits answered by sending every oathbreaker into the same shared nightmare. The rulers awoke days later unable to remember their own names, and the practice became known as the Nameless Rebellion. The collective reached its greatest influence during the War of Falling Stars, when it concealed Halcyon Glade from invading armies by folding the forest's roads into impossible circles. This triumph established the Spirits as protectors of the entire region, not merely guardians of the tree. Their defining catastrophe occurred 143 years ago during the Rite of Renewal. A desperate circle of wardens attempted to use the Sigil of Wood to cure a spreading spiritual blight. The rite was interrupted by an unknown traitor. The Sigil vanished, several Rootbound Voices were shattered, and the Eldertree began producing spirits afflicted by contradictory memories. The moonwells became unstable, and the collective turned inward. This event, called the Splintering, defined the faction's current paranoia and divided its members over whether mortals could ever again be trusted. In recent decades, the spirits have become more active. Dreams, hauntings, prophetic animal migrations, and sudden root growth suggest that the Eldertree is nearing a threshold. The collective believes the lost Sigil must be recovered before the tree either renews itself or dies in a way that could poison the spiritual balance of the region.
Supernatural collective · Neutral, tending toward benevolent preservation, but fractured between restorative idealism and ruthless spiritual necessity
