The Ashen Covenant
For the first century, the society operated as a hidden network of political assassins and famine profiteers. It spread from Veyr through merchant routes, arranging coups and manipulating food prices. During the second century, it infiltrated several royal courts and created a reputation for impossible intelligence. The faction's greatest triumph came when it ended the Nine Princes War by assassinating every claimant within the same lunar cycle, then placing a frightened child monarch on the throne. The resulting kingdom became the society's first long-term puppet state. Its first major setback occurred when the Order of the Last Lantern exposed three regional cells and burned the society's original surface archives. In response, the faction abandoned centralized records and developed its present structure of compartmentalized cells. The watershed moment came during the Eclipse of Empty Bells, 287 years ago. The Seven Black Nails attempted to use the Crown of Unmaking to erase the names of every living ruler from the world's collective memory. The ritual failed, killing two council members and leaving Veyr physically buried beneath the salt marsh. The survivors discovered that the ritual had awakened the Oracle Below, which began providing visions of possible futures. From that moment, the society changed from a conspiracy seeking influence into a movement seeking the deliberate collapse of civilization. Over the following centuries, it created wars, installed puppet dynasties, financed forbidden expeditions, and cultivated disasters that could be blamed on nature or rival powers. It has never conquered a continent openly, but its hidden influence reaches every major civilization. Today, the society is stronger than ever, yet increasingly divided between those who want to complete the ancient ritual and those who want to use its global network to seize direct power.
