The Spores of the Fallen Shepherd

The Spore Shepherd collapses into a heap of steaming caps, fibrous roots, and slowly dimming motes of green light. Beneath its central growth, the adventurers find a purse of scavenged coins, useful alchemical supplies, and a sealed potion protected from the damp. Three amethysts have been pressed into the creature's fungal body, perhaps as offerings or crude decorations. The most unusual prize is the living spore-knot at the heart of the creature. It pulses faintly in the hand and should be stored carefully, as it may remain viable for several days. The find is valuable for a third-level party without being so rich that it overshadows the danger of the encounter.
