Verdigris Hart - AI-generated fantasy Monster

Verdigris Hart

Local villagers tell stories of a silver-antlered stag that once led lost children home through the fog. After the Brassroot Engine began siphoning magic from the river, the guardian emerged covered in brass and moss, attacking construct patrols and crystal thieves alike. Rivetmeadow's elders believe the Hart is not evil but trapped inside a command loop. The correct bells can interrupt the signal, but only someone who understands the Engine's original harmonics can fully free it.

Rooted Ambush. The Hart has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made in forests, reeds, shallow water, or heavy fog. On the first round of combat, it has advantage on attack rolls against creatures that have not yet taken a turn.
Woodland Stride. The Hart can move through nonmagical plants without being slowed by them and without taking damage from them. It can also move across natural difficult terrain without extra movement.
Riverstone Awareness. The Hart cannot be surprised while conscious. It can sense the movement of creatures touching the ground or water within 30 feet, even through natural cover.
Engine Frenzy. While the Brassroot Engine's signal reaches the area, the Hart has advantage on attack rolls against steam constructs and creatures carrying river-crystal. It has disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws against effects that would calm or charm it. Resonant bell tones suppress this trait for 1 minute.
Siphoned Magic. The Hart's attacks count as magical. Its natural weapons deal force damage in addition to their normal damage, reflecting the stolen magic circulating through its body.
Brassroot Resilience. When the Hart is reduced to 0 hit points, it can make a Constitution saving throw. On a success, it drops to 1 hit point instead, its control gear emits a burst of steam, and it becomes incapacitated until the end of its next turn. This trait does not function if Engine Frenzy has been suppressed.
Riverheart Renewal. If the Hart starts its turn standing in natural water or on living ground, it regains 10 hit points, provided it has at least 1 hit point. This trait does not function within 30 feet of an active Brassroot Engine vent.

Spells

Druidcraft (cantrip, transmutation). The Hart can create or extinguish a small flame, manipulate loose water, open or close an unlocked door, or produce a harmless bell-like chime.
Fog Cloud (level 1, conjuration). The Hart creates a 20-foot-radius sphere of fog centered on a point within 120 feet. The sphere lasts for 10 minutes or until dispersed by strong wind.
Entangle (level 1, conjuration). The Hart magically commands nearby roots and vegetation to entangle creatures in a 20-foot square within 90 feet. Creatures must make a Strength saving throw or become restrained.
Wall of Thorns (level 6, conjuration). The Hart creates a wall of living thorns up to 60 feet long, 10 feet high, and 5 feet thick. The wall lasts for up to 10 minutes.

Actions

Multiattack. The Verdigris Hart makes two attacks: one with its Brassroot Antlers and one with its Rootbound Hoof, or it uses Steamburst if available.
Brassroot Antlers. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 () piercing damage plus 7 () force damage. If the target is Large or smaller, it must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pushed up to 10 feet and knocked prone.
Rootbound Hoof. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 () bludgeoning damage. The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or become restrained by spectral roots until the end of the Hart's next turn.
Steamburst. The Hart exhales enchanted steam in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 31 () fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. On a failed save, a creature is also blinded until the end of its next turn. The cone becomes heavily obscured until the start of the Hart's next turn. The Hart can use this action only once, then it must recharge on a roll of 5 or 6 at the start of its turn.
Flooded Root Snare. The Hart causes roots and floodwater to erupt in a 20-foot-radius area centered on a point it can see within 60 feet. The area becomes difficult terrain until the end of the Hart's next turn. Each creature in the area must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be restrained until the end of its next turn. A restrained creature can use its action to make a Strength or Dexterity check, freeing itself on a success.

Reactions

Protective Rootlash. When a creature the Hart can see within 10 feet is hit by an attack, the Hart reduces the damage by 10 () as spectral roots and brass plates interpose themselves. If the protected creature is a child, wounded villager, or helpless creature, the reduction is 15 instead.
Floodback. When the Hart is hit by a melee attack while standing in water, it can force the attacker to make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, the attacker falls prone and is pushed 10 feet through the water.

Legendary Actions

Rootstep. The Hart moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks. It can move through spaces occupied by Small or smaller plants without treating them as difficult terrain.
Hoof Strike. The Hart makes one Rootbound Hoof attack.
Antler Gleam (costs 2 actions). One creature the Hart can see within 60 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened until the end of its next turn. A creature carrying river-crystal has disadvantage on this save.
Riversurge (costs 3 actions). The Hart uses Flooded Root Snare, even if that action is not currently available from its normal action list. It cannot use this legendary action again until the start of its next turn.

Notes for the game master

The Verdigris Hart is designed as a challenging encounter for four 10th-level characters, especially when fought in its flooded woodland territory.
A character who deals thunder damage through a bell, gong, tuned instrument, or steam whistle can attempt the resonance counter described in Counters.
The Hart's Engine Frenzy trait represents external control. Removing or suppressing the control gear should change the encounter from a lethal battle into a negotiation opportunity.

Tactics

  1. Opening

The Hart remains motionless among trees or riverstones until a vulnerable target enters the flooded zone. It begins with Flooded Root Snare, then charges the most heavily armed intruder while steam obscures its position.

  2. Mid-fight

It divides the battlefield with Flooded Root Snare, knocks targets prone with its antlers, and uses the terrain to isolate one enemy at a time. It avoids attacking children, unconscious villagers, and creatures that drop weapons and retreat.

  3. End of the fight

When reduced below 45 hit points, the Hart attempts to isolate the apparent source of the control signal. It uses Steamburst to cover a retreat toward flooded ground, then focuses attacks on creatures carrying river-crystal or bearing the Brassroot Engine's mark.

  4. Retreat

The Hart does not flee while the control gear is active unless reduced below 45 hit points or struck by resonant bells or harmonized steam whistles. If freed from control, it retreats from needless violence and watches from cover.

How it fights

Begin hidden in reeds, shallow water, or among moss-covered stones.
Use Flooded Root Snare to separate the party before charging the most dangerous target.
Target creatures carrying river-crystal or visibly bearing Brassroot Engine insignia.
Use Steamburst after at least two targets are restrained or clustered.
Avoid pursuing fleeing children, wounded villagers, or creatures that stop fighting.
If the party uses resonance attacks, shift from killing blows to defensive positioning and observe their intentions.

Who it attacks first

Creatures carrying stolen river-crystal
Steam constructs and mechanical creatures
Characters attacking children, wounded villagers, or the river itself
The most heavily armored or visibly commanding intruder

Works well with

Bell-ringing villagers can suppress the Hart's Engine Frenzy while characters work on the control gear.
Steam constructs draw the Hart's immediate aggression, allowing the party to reposition or negotiate.
Flooded terrain, reeds, and willow roots amplify the Hart's control over the battlefield.
A druid, ranger, artificer, or character familiar with river-crystals can identify the creature's original guardian nature.

How to beat it

Resonant bell tones or harmonized steam whistles disrupt the Brassroot Engine frequency. As an action, a creature within 60 feet can produce the correct tone with a bell, musical instrument, or steam whistle by succeeding on a DC 15 Performance, Arcana, or tinker's tools check. On three total successes, the Hart loses its Engine Frenzy trait for 1 minute and can be reasoned with.
Lightning damage can overload the fused control gear. If the Hart takes 15 or more lightning damage from one source, it must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn.
Open, dry ground limits its Rooted Ambush trait and makes its flooded terrain easier to avoid.
Creatures that release stolen river-crystal and openly tend the Hart's wounds gain advantage on checks to calm or negotiate with it.

Ways to avoid a fight

The party can observe the Hart from concealment and identify the Brassroot control gear with a successful DC 15 Investigation or Arcana check.
A character can calm the Hart by lowering weapons, releasing stolen river-crystal, and succeeding on a DC 17 Animal Handling, Nature, or Persuasion check. Three successes before two failures end the immediate conflict.
A character with tinker's tools can temporarily disconnect one steam conduit with a successful DC 18 check made while adjacent to the Hart and not incapacitated.
A resonant bell, church chime, tuned gong, or harmonized steam whistle can suppress the Hart's Engine Frenzy if the correct frequency is discovered in Rivetmeadow's old boilerhouse.
The Hart can communicate simple concepts through glowing antlers, hoofbeats, and repeated tones: pain, danger, river, children, Engine, and betrayal.

Ecology

A towering stag-like guardian stands nearly 12 feet tall at the shoulder. Its body combines dark woodland muscle, smooth riverstone, braided moss, and plates of green-blue corroded brass. Copper pipes emerge from its ribs and neck, releasing thin ribbons of steam. Its antlers resemble branching roots wrapped around glowing river-crystals, and each step leaves wet hoofprints filled with pale green light. A brass gear, fused painfully into its sternum, pulses whenever the distant Brassroot Engine siphons magic.

Behavior

The Hart is an ambush predator driven by pain, territorial instinct, and the Brassroot Engine's corrupted commands. It attacks trespassers, steam constructs, and anyone carrying stolen river-crystal. It deliberately avoids children, wounded villagers, and those who show signs of protecting the forest. Its aggression decreases if its wounds are acknowledged, the control gear is disabled, or the party produces a resonant bell tone or harmonized steam whistle.

How it lives

The Verdigris Hart was once a natural guardian spirit bound to the riverside forest. The Brassroot Engine siphoned part of its magic and replaced that essence with a crude steam-driven control system. It now feeds on mineral-rich water, fallen leaves, raw magic, and the energy stored in river-crystals. It is not naturally predatory toward humanoids, but the Engine's commands have distorted its threat recognition.

Lair

The Hart's lair is a half-submerged stone circle beneath an ancient willow. Brass pipes from the Brassroot Engine pierce the roots and vanish into the riverbed. At the center lies a shallow pool of glowing water surrounded by discarded construct parts, broken bells, and antlers shed during earlier surges of magic.

Lore

Local villagers tell stories of a silver-antlered stag that once led lost children home through the fog. After the Brassroot Engine began siphoning magic from the river, the guardian emerged covered in brass and moss, attacking construct patrols and crystal thieves alike. Rivetmeadow's elders believe the Hart is not evil but trapped inside a command loop. The correct bells can interrupt the signal, but only someone who understands the Engine's original harmonics can fully free it.

What drives it

Protect the river and forest, repel crystal thieves and steam constructs, and silence the painful control frequency imposed by the Brassroot Engine.

After the fight

If defeated without addressing the Brassroot Engine's control frequency, the Verdigris Hart collapses into riverstone, moss, and corroded brass. If calmed or freed, it retreats to the river's deep pools and may later guide the party through the forest, defend Rivetmeadow from hostile constructs, or expose the Engine's influence. If betrayed after being aided, it becomes a relentless enemy of the settlement and floods its lower streets.

“Rivetmeadow's elders believe the Hart is not evil but trapped inside a command loop.”
From its lore

Variants

Verdigris Hart Calf: Medium creature with 72 hit points, AC 16, no legendary actions, and one Steamburst use per day.
Brassroot Alpha: Huge creature with 230 hit points, AC 19, a 50-foot swim speed, and a Steamburst cone increased to 60 feet.
Freed Riverhorn: Remove Engine Frenzy and Brassroot Resilience, give the Hart immunity to being charmed and frightened, and allow it to cast Speak with Animals at will.
Rivetmeadow Sentinel: Replace Engine Frenzy with a protective command. The Hart attacks only creatures that threaten the village, its river, or its children.

Hooks

Plot hooks

Rivetmeadow hires the party to retrieve a shipment of river-crystals, but the crystals were stolen from the Hart's sacred pool and the village leaders concealed the truth.
The Brassroot Engine is increasing its siphoning range, forcing the Hart to attack more villagers. The party must repair or destroy the Engine before the guardian loses all restraint.
A child from Rivetmeadow has befriended the Hart and knows a melody that can calm it, but the melody is incomplete.
The party can recruit the Hart to defend the village from a clockwork dredger, but only if they first remove the control gear without killing the guardian.
A rival faction deliberately attacks the Hart, hoping to make Rivetmeadow appear unsafe and justify seizing its river-crystal trade.

How to use it

Use it as a dangerous guardian blocking a route through flooded woodland.
Place the party between the Hart and Rivetmeadow when frightened villagers or steam constructs provoke the creature.
Make the encounter solvable through combat, investigation, or a three-stage effort to disrupt the control frequency.
Allow the party to discover that the Hart's attacks become more precise and cruel whenever the Brassroot Engine is active nearby.
If the party earns its trust, the Hart can become a temporary ally against Engine agents, saboteurs, or corrupted constructs.

Treasure

A river-crystal shard worth 250 gp, unless returned to the Hart's sacred pool
Three verdigris steam conduits that can be used as components for magical machinery
A fragment of the Hart's original antler, which can serve as a focus for divination or nature magic
A coded brass plate bearing the control frequency of the Brassroot Engine
