Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If Korgath fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.
Earth-Shaking Steps. Whenever Korgath moves at least 20 feet on his turn, each creature within 10 feet of him must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.
Siege Monster. Korgath deals double damage to objects and structures.
Seismic Tracker. Korgath has advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to track creatures that have moved across the ground within the last hour.

Actions

Multiattack. Korgath makes two attacks: one with his bite and one with his tail. He can't make both attacks against the same target.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 34 () piercing damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it is grappled (escape ). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and Korgath can't bite another target.
Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 21 () bludgeoning damage.
Swallow. Korgath makes one bite attack against a Medium or smaller target he is grappling. If the attack hits, the target is swallowed, and the grapple ends. The swallowed target is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside Korgath, and it takes 21 () acid damage at the start of each of Korgath's turns. If Korgath takes 30 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside him, Korgath must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, which fall prone in a space within 10 feet of Korgath. If Korgath dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by him and can escape from the corpse by using 15 feet of movement, exiting prone.

Reactions

Vibration Retaliation. When a creature within 60 feet moves or casts a spell with a somatic component, Korgath can move up to half his speed toward that creature.

Legendary Actions

Tail Sweep. Korgath swings his tail. Each creature within 15 feet of Korgath must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be knocked prone and take 12 () bludgeoning damage.
Roar of the Earth-Breaker (costs 2 actions). Korgath lets out a bone-chilling roar. Each creature within 60 feet of Korgath that can hear him must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of Korgath's next turn. If a creature fails by 5 or more, it is also stunned while frightened in this way.
Chomp (costs 2 actions). Korgath makes one Bite attack.

Notes for the game master

Korgath's Tremorsense is his primary way of locating invisible or hidden foes.
Ensure his movement triggers the Earth-Shaking Steps to disrupt party positioning.

Tactics

  1. Opening

Korgath begins with Roar of the Earth-Breaker to thin the herd and isolate brave targets. He then uses his full movement to trigger Earth-Shaking Steps.

  2. Mid-fight

Focus on grappling the highest DPS character with a Bite, then repositioning to a ledge or hazard to drop them or Swallow them.

  3. End of the fight

If reduced to below 50 HP, Korgath stops using Swallow and uses his Tail Sweep more frequently to keep multiple enemies prone while he tries to finish off the most wounded targets.

  4. Retreat

Korgath is an apex predator; he does not retreat unless his target is clearly unnatural (e.g., a Construct he cannot eat). If reduced to 20 HP, he attempts to retreat into the canyons where his camouflage is best.

How it fights

Keep targets prone using Earth-Shaking Steps and Tail Sweep to gain advantage on Bite attacks.
Use Tremorsense to find the Rogue or Wizard hiding behind cover.
Drag grappled targets away from their allies to prevent help actions.

Who it attacks first

Creatures making the most noise or vibration (Heavily armored fighters, casters using thunder damage)
Small, easy to swallow targets
Creatures that have wounded him significantly

Works well with

Hazardous Terrain: The plateau has falling rocks or unstable ledges that Korgath's Earth-Shaking Steps can trigger.
Dust Clouds: Korgath can kick up dust to obscure vision, as he relies on Tremorsense anyway.

How to beat it

Flight: Korgath cannot reach targets in the air.
Silence Spell: While it doesn't stop tremors, it may confuse his sense of roar-based control.
Difficult Terrain: Slowing Korgath down prevents his Earth-Shaking Steps from triggering.

Ways to avoid a fight

Luring him away with a large carcass (Survival check DC 20).
Using 'Pass Without Trace' to avoid his tremorsense while crossing his territory.
Offering a rare mineral or magical item that vibrates at a frequency he finds soothing.

Ecology

An enormous Tyrannosaurus Rex standing nearly twenty-five feet tall. Its scales are a deep, weathered charcoal grey, but its face is dominated by a lattice of thick, jagged red scar tissue across its snout and jaw. One eye is milky white and blind, but the other glows with a primal, predatory intelligence. Dust and grit seem to perpetually fall from its hide as if it just rose from the earth itself.

Behavior

Korgath does not chase; he intercepts. He is a patient hunter that uses tremorsense to track movement through the plateau's floor. When he strikes, it is with a deafening roar intended to paralyze prey with terror before the first bite lands.

How it lives

Korgath is the singular apex predator of the Red Plateau. He maintains the balance by culling megafauna, and his presence is so dominant that other predators flee the region entirely when he is active.

Lair

The Echoing Maw: A deep, bowl-shaped canyon where sound bounces perfectly, allowing Korgath to pinpoint the location of any creature that makes a noise.

Habitat
Arid plateaus, rocky canyons, and sun-bleached badlands.

Signs that it is near

Rhythmic thudding that can be felt in the feet from miles away
Giant, three-toed footprints deep enough to serve as small ponds
Carcasses of Triceratops with their spines snapped cleanly in half
Absolute silence from birds and smaller animals

Lore

Tribal legends speak of Korgath as a spirit of the earth's anger. It is said that when he walks, the mountains bow, and when he roars, the clouds shatter. He has survived a dozen extinction events, bearing the scars of lightning strikes, volcanic vents, and the weapons of forgotten kings.

What drives it

Territorial dominance and the satiation of an endless, ancient hunger.

After the fight

With Korgath gone, the plateau's ecology shifts violently. Lesser raptors and herbivores overpopulate, eventually requiring the party to address a new famine or plague.

“It is said that when he walks, the mountains bow, and when he roars, the clouds shatter.”
From its lore

Variants

Infernal Korgath: His scars glow with magma, and his bite deals additional fire damage.
Zombie Earth-Breaker: Loses Tremorsense but gains Undead Fortitude and necrotic breath.

Hooks

Plot hooks

The local mining colony has gone silent after 'The Earth Started Screaming'.
A legendary druid asks the party to relocate Korgath before a nearby settlement's expansion leads to a massacre.
A collector wants the red facial scales of Korgath to forge a Shield of Fear Resistance.

How to use it

A climax for a wilderness exploration arc.
A 'force of nature' encounter that requires the party to stay quiet or move carefully.

Treasure

The 'Heart of the Plateau': A massive, fossilized amber stone found in his lair worth 5,000gp.
Scars of the Earth-Breaker: Harvesting his hide provides enough material for two sets of +1 Scale Mail that grant resistance to being knocked prone.
