Kätka Girkel
Kätka Girkel
At the table
Voice
A dry contralto with a smoky edge, usually quiet enough that listeners lean closer. When furious, Kätka becomes almost whisper-soft, forcing everyone nearby to listen.
Kätka's voice is low, dry, and quick, with hard consonants and an unusual habit of placing stress on the final word of a sentence. Their accent carries faint northern vowel shapes and clipped market slang. When reading old runes aloud, their voice becomes softer and more rhythmic, almost like a counting song.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Kätka first offers a small useful service, such as identifying a forged seal or finding a safe alley, then tests the party with a morally uncomfortable truth. They do not ask for trust. They ask whether the party is willing to inspect evidence that could make their official mission impossible. If the party shows concern for victims, Kätka reveals more. If they focus only on rewards, Kätka offers payment while secretly preparing to use them.
Goal
Expose the original terms of the ember pact, recover proof from the sealed settlement, and force the Crimson City to choose openly whether it will renegotiate, release, or continue exploiting the ember-spirit.
Motivation
Kätka wants justice for the people erased beneath the district, but beneath that anger is a desperate need to prove that their brother's death had meaning and that the old pact can become a living agreement rather than another tool of power.
Appearance
Kätka has the compact, weathered look of someone who has spent years sleeping beside printing presses and climbing service ladders. Their movements are economical and slightly abrupt, as if every gesture has been edited for unnecessary words. Fine soot clings permanently to the creases around their knuckles, while their coat smells of hot brass, bitter orange peel, and lamp oil. Their face is narrow, with a blunt nose broken long ago and a pale scar running from the left temple to the jaw. The unexpected contradiction is their immaculate hands. Even during a chase, Kätka keeps their fingernails clean and their fingertips wrapped in white linen, treating ink as a stain but blood as something they will touch without hesitation.
Clothing
A charcoal work coat with a red inner lining, patched at the elbows with strips of old ward parchment. They wear a high-collared linen shirt, narrow utility trousers, soft-soled boots, a copper-lensed magnifier on a cord, and white finger wraps stained only at the edges.
Body language
Kätka leans toward written evidence and away from emotional appeals. They hold their elbows close, tap two fingers against their thumb while calculating, and turn their whole body toward anyone who mentions the dead. When lying, they become unusually still and stop blinking for several seconds.

20 traits and drivesKätka is patient with facts, impatient with excuses, and unexpectedly gentle with frightened children and injured animals. They can spend hours restoring a damaged page, yet dismiss a grieving adult with a cold instruction to stand aside. In public, they are dryly courteous and nearly impossible to provoke. In the safehouse, surrounded by names of the dead, they become intense, sleepless, and willing to gamble other people's safety. They despise heroic speeches but secretly yearn for someone to tell them that they are not alone in carrying the past.

Background
Kätka was born in the river settlement of Tervak, a community that existed beneath what is now the Ember Gate District. Their grandmother taught them the old settlement's knot-script, a practical system of marks used to record water rights, furnace safety, births, and the original terms of the ember-spirit pact. When the Crimson City expanded, officials declared Tervak an abandoned ruin and sealed it beneath the new foundations. Kätka's family was allowed to remain as maintenance workers, but several relatives disappeared after objecting to altered translations of the ward inscriptions. Kätka became an apprentice to the city's official ward technician, NPC 1, and the two formed a brilliant partnership. Together they discovered a line of ancient text that described the ember-spirit not as a power source, but as a negotiated guardian entitled to refuse commands. NPC 1 wanted more time to verify the finding. The city wanted the discovery buried. During a furnace accident, Kätka's younger brother and twelve other workers died after an emergency vent was deliberately locked to protect a noble foundry. NPC 1 signed the official report blaming worker negligence. Kätka never forgave the signature, though they still believe their former partner may have been coerced. Now Kätka operates a cramped printshop called The Bent Type beneath the market. Behind a false wall lies a safehouse filled with copied runes, names of the dead, stolen maintenance ledgers, and a map of the sealed settlement. Kätka knows Monster 1 is not a mindless elemental threat, but a damaged fragment of the ancient ember-spirit wearing a predatory shape. Their recovered records also show that Monster 2 grows stronger whenever riots, executions, and public panic disturb the ward's emotional currents. Kätka wants the party to recover proof from the ward's heart and force the city to choose between reform, renegotiation, or liberation. They underestimate how many innocents may die if the ward collapses.
Role in the story
Kätka is the moral counterweight to the official quest-giver. They reveal that repairing the Ember Gate ward may preserve an unjust pact and demand that the party recover proof before choosing a solution. Depending on the party's actions, Kätka can become an ally who guides them beneath the district, a rival who sabotages the official repair, a hostage used to control the Tervak archive, or a betrayer who sacrifices the party's escape route to expose the ward's heart.
