Appearance
Maerel Voss moves like a drawn bowstring, all restraint and sudden force. She is broad-shouldered and weather-tough, with a soldier's straight posture that softens only when she is comforting the frightened or kneeling in prayer. Her chain mail is painstakingly cleaned but visibly mended in three places with pale brass wire, and over it she wears a faded green tabard with a sunburst that has been partly stitched over with a river reed motif. The unexpected detail is that her gauntlets are lined with blue silk, delicate as a noble's gloves, because she cannot stand the rasp of metal against old scar tissue. Her left eyebrow splits around a tiny silver ring, and when she is angry the ring flashes like a warning bell.
“Measured, low, and practical, with the cadence of someone used to calming frightened people. She rarely wastes words, but when she speaks of duty or the dead, her sentences become almost ceremonial.”

Distinguishing Features
A split eyebrow ring of tarnished silver
A healed burn pattern along the right forearm shaped like reeds in wind
A green-stained prayer cord wrapped twice around her wrist
A shield engraved with a sunburst that has been partially over-etched into a river lily
A habit of blinking once when she lies, then never blinking again until she is done
Voice
“Warm contralto with a gravelly edge from years of chanting over rain and smoke”
Clothing
Layered chain mail, a green-white tabard, weatherproof cloak with river-mud stains at the hem, leather belt pouches full of chalk, thread, and wrapped herbs, blue silk glove linings, practical boots with thick soles
Body Language
She keeps one hand close to her shield strap even at rest, and her shoulders rise slightly when she is worried. When she is truly pleased, the stern line of her mouth softens first, then her eyes. She rarely points; instead she opens her palm as if weighing an argument in it.
