Appearance
Vera Cinder is a compact woman whose presence feels heavier than her frame. Her cropped gray hair lies close to her scalp like frost on iron, while the left side of her jaw is webbed with old burn scars that pull her smile slightly crooked. She moves with economical, silent precision, never turning her back on a doorway and never crossing a room without measuring its distances. Her hands are callused, blackened at the fingertips, and unusually gentle when handling frightened people. The unexpected contradiction is her delicacy: she wears a tiny blue glass bead in one ear, a keepsake more suited to a singer or jeweler than a hardened city captain.
“Low, clipped, and deliberate. Vera rarely raises her voice, but when she gives an emergency command it cuts through shouting crowds like a bell.”

Distinguishing Features
A scarred left jaw that slightly distorts her smile
A tiny blue glass bead worn in her left ear
Soot permanently embedded beneath several fingernails
A copper badge polished only on its front, leaving its back black with ash
She counts exits before sitting down
Voice
“A smoky contralto with a dry rasp, as though every sentence has passed through a chimney before reaching the air.”
Clothing

Body Language
Vera sits only after counting exits, windows, and the number of people between herself and the nearest weapon. When calm, she keeps both hands visible and rests her thumbs against her belt. When angry, she becomes perfectly still except for the slow flexing of her scarred jaw. Around children, she lowers herself to their eye level and softens her posture without softening her scrutiny.
