Appearance
Pippin is a narrow, dust-smudged human boy with the restless stillness of a fox listening for traps. He moves lightly despite worn knees and bare ankles, always seeming half a step away from shadow. His face is all sharp elbows and alert expression, with a nose that has healed crooked from one bad fall and a mouth usually pressed into a wary, secretive line. The most striking thing about him is the contrast between his ragged, soot-dark cave clothes and the neatness with which he keeps everything else: his hair is combed back with surprising care, and his little collection of shiny cave pebbles is arranged as if it were treasure in a noble's hall.
“Soft and quick, with a low-town accent and a habit of ending important sentences in a whisper, as if the walls might be listening..”

Distinguishing Features
A crescent scar on his left wrist from a snapped quarry chain
One front tooth chipped into a tiny wedge
A satchel lined with charcoal marks and pebble maps
Always carrying a smooth black stone he says is lucky
A faint mineral sparkle in the crease of one ear from cave dust
Voice
“Bright but guarded, with a childlike lilt that sharpens into surprising seriousness when he talks about the cave or anyone being left behind.”
Clothing
A patched brown tunic cinched with twine, short trousers turned up twice at the cuff, a scavenged wool cap with one ear flap missing, and a miner's old leather vest cut down to fit him like armor that never quite learned his size
Body Language
He stands with one shoulder slightly forward like a child bracing against an unseen wind, eyes constantly moving, fingers busy with stones, cord, or sleeve hems. When scared, he crouches instead of fleeing, making himself small and flat to the ground. When excited, he talks with his hands and rocks on his heels, but he stops instantly if someone steps too close.
