Haldren Pike
Magistrate
Haldren Pike
Species
Human
Appearance
Haldren Pike looks carved out of wet dockwood and old duty, a broad-shouldered man with a salt-stiff beard and hands stained the black-green of ink, river mud, and candle soot. He moves with the careful sway of a ferryman in rough water, never wasting a step, yet his coat is pressed and mended with almost embarrassing neatness. The oddest thing about him is a gold-threaded mourning sash worn under his plain magistrate's cloak, as if he keeps a private funeral hidden beneath public respectability. His face is lined like a weathered ledger page, but when the lantern light catches him, his eyes seem far too bright for a man who claims to sleep little.
“Measured and formal, with dockworker bluntness slipping through whenever he is tired or frightened. He favors precise words, loaded pauses, and legal phrasing that can be interpreted two ways.”

Distinguishing Features
Ink-black staining on the left thumb and forefinger that never washes out
A gold-threaded mourning sash hidden beneath his coat
A cracked signet ring worn on a cord around his neck
A constant smell of river reeds, wax, and damp parchment
Voice
“Low, dry, and soot-edged, with a ferryman's practiced patience and a clerk's habit of never wasting syllables.”
Clothing
A slate-gray magistrate coat over a river-green waistcoat, lacquered boots meant for wet planks, a leather belt of tally pouches, and a sealed black cloak clasp marked with Brackenford's quay rune. He wears clean gloves in public and removes them only when anxious or alone.
Body Language
He speaks with his hands mostly still, then suddenly pinches a page, taps a knuckle, or straightens a collar when he is trying to hide distress. When angry, he becomes painfully polite and stands too close. When relieved, he rubs his thumb across his ring finger where a missing signet used to rest.
