Oryn Hallow
Oryn Hallow
At the table
Voice
Gravelly and low, like grinding stones under water.
Short, breathless sentences. He speaks in a low rasp and often pauses to clear his throat or check his surroundings.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He will initially try to intimidate the players into paying a 'fine' for a fabricated infraction. If they mention Thalassa or his family, he becomes much more guarded and prone to negotiation.
Goal
To retire with enough money to move his sister to the countryside.
Motivation
To ensure his sister Elara receives the best care at the hospice, regardless of the moral cost to himself.
Appearance
Oryn carries himself with a perpetual slouch as if the salt-heavy air of the Waterdeep docks is pushing him into the cobblestones. His skin is the texture of cured leather, deeply creased at the corners of eyes that look like they have forgotten the sensation of sleep. His City Watch scale mail is a mess of oxidized copper and dull steel, rattling discordantly with every step. Most striking are his feet: he wears high-end, impeccably polished calfskin boots that cost more than a year of his official salary, a stark and jarring contrast to his otherwise derelict equipment. He smells faintly of clove-scented tobacco and the metallic tang of the harbor.
Clothing
A stained yellow and white tabard of the Waterdeep City Watch worn over tarnished scale mail, paired with out-of-place luxury leather boots.
Body language
Heavy, dragging footsteps; avoids direct eye contact; frequently rubs his lower back as if in pain.

Personality
13 traits and drivesOryn is a man of fraying edges, acting with sharp, bureaucratic efficiency toward strangers to hide his internal exhaustion. He is surprisingly gentle with the street urchins of the Dock Ward, often sharing his meager rations, yet he is coldly transactional and dismissive with his fellow guards. He believes himself a ghost haunting his own life, operating on a autopilot of corruption that he hates but cannot stop because it funds the only thing he still loves.

Background
Ten years ago, Oryn was a paragon of the Watch until a dock fire claimed his family's warehouse and his wife's health. The medical costs for her lingering lung-rot were astronomical. When Mistress Thalassa offered him a pouch of gold to leave a specific gate unbarred for an hour, he took it. He told himself it was just once. Now, a decade later, his wife has passed but his sister has developed the same ailment. He is trapped in Thalassa's pocket, taking 'stipends' to facilitate smuggling. Every coin he takes feels like lead in his stomach, and lately, the guilt has begun to manifest as physical illness.
Role in the story
Oryn serves as a compromised gatekeeper. He can provide the players entry to restricted areas or information on smuggling if they pay his 'tax' or appeal to his buried sense of justice.
