Species
Human
Appearance
Vezhka is a narrow, weather-battered person with long fingers, a slightly crooked spine, and the restless balance of someone accustomed to standing on a pitching deck. Their skin is mapped with tiny pale scars from salt burns and broken glass instruments. Their coat hangs from them in layered, damp folds, and every movement causes small brass gauges to click against one another. Their hair seems permanently windblown even indoors, lifting in stray black and silver wisps. The unexpected contradiction is their face: despite their gaunt, storm-haunted appearance, they have soft cheeks, a warm smile, and an almost grandmotherly tenderness when handling injured birds or frightened children.
“Their voice is low, quick, and dry, with a musical lilt that becomes almost chantlike when reciting measurements. They speak Common with clipped sailor's phrasing and occasionally use Aquan words for types of rain that have no exact translation.”

Distinguishing Features
A branching lightning scar runs from the left collarbone to the center of the chest.
Their left ear is pierced with seven mismatched brass rings, each tuned to a different wind direction.
A small compass needle is embedded beneath the skin of their right palm and turns toward magical storms.
Their shadow sometimes points toward the sea even when the sun is elsewhere.
They carry a white gull feather that never becomes wet.
Voice
“A dry contralto with a faint rasp, like rope dragged across wet wood. When excited, Vezhka speaks faster until their words nearly tumble over one another.”
Clothing
A patched navy oilskin coat lined with faded red sailcloth, several wool waistcoats, fingerless gloves, salt-stiffened trousers, and soft deck shoes with copper nails hammered into the soles. A belt holds measuring rods, chalk, twine, and small stoppered vials.
Body Language
Vezhka leans toward people as though listening for pressure changes in their lungs. Their fingers constantly tap changing rhythms against metal surfaces. When frightened, they become perfectly still except for one thumb rubbing the scar over their ribs.
