Appearance
Vara Redhand is a broad-shouldered human woman with the compact, weathered strength of someone who has spent decades lifting iron rather than posing with it. Her hands are heavily callused, darkened permanently around the knuckles by forge soot, and her left palm bears a branching scar that resembles a red river delta. She moves with a slight forward lean, as if perpetually braced against a furnace wind, yet she is unexpectedly quiet on her feet. Her face is square and ruddy, with a broken nose, a deep crease between her brows, and a smile that arrives suddenly and vanishes even faster. She leaves an impression of heat, smoke, and practical competence, but when she laughs, it is soft and almost girlish, completely at odds with her intimidating silhouette.
“Low, measured, and smoky, with clipped sentences. Her voice becomes unexpectedly soft when speaking to children, animals, or the injured.”

Distinguishing Features
A branching red scar across her left palm
A copper tooth visible when she smiles
A missing section of her right eyebrow burned away in the Black Kiln siege
A tiny tattoo of an anvil behind her left ear
Her shadow sometimes appears to flicker like firelight when she is angry
Voice
“A low contralto with a rasp like iron dragged across stone. Her laughter is brief, startled, and much warmer than her usual tone.”
Clothing
A soot-stained red leather apron over a padded gambeson, iron-reinforced boots, fingerless gloves, a charcoal-gray shirt, and a copper key ring worn around her neck. Her apron is patched with scraps of banners taken from battles she regrets surviving.
Body Language
Vara plants both feet wide when negotiating, rubs her scarred palm when lying, and tilts her head toward distant sounds like a hunting dog. When angry, she stops moving entirely.
