Marra Veyra
Marra Veyra
At the table
“a parcel that forgot its owner.”
Voice
A smoky contralto with a laugh like a bottle rolling across a deck
Her voice is low, musical, and rasped by years of salt air. She speaks with a rolling coastal cadence, stretching the final word of a sentence when teasing and clipping every syllable when issuing a threat. She peppers conversation with nautical metaphors, old sailor blessings, and sudden flashes of Elvish poetry.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Marra begins with hospitality, food, and harmless gossip. She tests visitors by offering them three rumors, one true, one false, and one dangerously incomplete. She can be pressured by proof that the sealed object threatens residents, bribed with information about Captain Orrow, or persuaded by a promise to protect Nibs and the neighborhood. She reacts badly to threats against her staff but respects anyone who admits their real motive.
Goal
Keep the Salt-Stained Saint and its surrounding neighborhood safe while discovering who sent the courier, what the sealed object contains, and whether Captain Orrow is truly alive.
Motivation
Marra wants to turn the Salt-Stained Saint into a lasting refuge where no one is exploited for needing food, shelter, or passage. Beneath that ideal is a more personal need to prove that the girl who survived the reef can choose who gets rescued.
Appearance
Marra is a broad-shouldered half-elf with weathered copper-brown skin, a crooked nose, and hands permanently roughened by salt, rope, and lye soap. Her silver-black hair is braided with tiny brass fishhooks, while one side of her face is smooth and elegant and the other is ridged by old burn scars. She moves with a sailor's rolling balance even on dry floors, yet pours drinks with the delicate precision of a jeweler. Her smile is warm enough to make strangers feel adopted, but her stillness can make a room feel suddenly airless. The unexpected contradiction is her immaculate, pearl-white fingernails, maintained every night despite the grime and violence of tavern life.
Clothing
A dark teal waistcoat over a cream linen shirt, copper buttons, salt-stiffened trousers, polished sea boots, and a red sash containing lockpicks, chalk, and a hidden garrote wire. Her coat is lined with scraps of old nautical charts.
Body language
Marra leans toward ordinary sailors as though sharing a treasured confidence, then leans away from criminals as though measuring the distance to a weapon. She polishes a glass whenever she is lying, taps two fingers against her thumb when calculating, and plants both feet wide whenever someone threatens a local resident.

Distinguishing features
Personality
17 traits and drivesMarra is warm, theatrical, and generous with ordinary sailors, offering them food before questions and stories before judgment. With criminals, she becomes coldly calculating, treating every threat as a contract to be priced. She is genuinely protective of nearby residents and will risk her business, freedom, or life for them, yet she is evasive with people she loves because vulnerability feels like handing an enemy a loaded pistol. In a cheerful mood she sings while working, in a suspicious mood she becomes unnervingly still, and when furious she lowers her voice until everyone nearby must lean closer.

Combat
AC 13 · HP 18 · 30 feetMarra avoids a fair fight. She uses tables, swinging lanterns, spilled drink, narrow passages, and loyal patrons to divide attackers. Her first priority is moving residents toward exits. Her second is forcing enemies to reveal who sent them. If badly outmatched, she retreats through a concealed dumbwaiter shaft into the alley and triggers a bell that summons three neighborhood allies.

Background
Marra Veyra was born aboard the merchant cutter Blue Mercy, where her half-elven mother served as navigator and her human father kept the galley. At fifteen, Marra survived a mutiny that killed both parents and left her stranded on a reef for three nights. A pirate captain named Dask Orrow found her and taught her that charm, timing, and a clean exit could matter more than a sharp blade. Marra eventually became the Blue Mercy's quartermaster under the name Brass Marra, famous for negotiating safe passage through blockades without firing a shot. She abandoned piracy after Orrow ordered the burning of a fishing village that had refused to pay protection. Marra secretly smuggled children and elderly villagers to safety, then turned Orrow's own crew against him. Years later, she bought the Salt-Stained Saint in FreeHold and transformed it into neutral ground for sailors, dockhands, runaways, and people who needed one honest meal. Her formative experience was the reef, where she learned that rescue always has a cost and that no one survives alone. She is now dealing with a sealed object hidden beneath her tavern by a cloaked courier, pressure from harbor authorities, a criminal syndicate seeking the object, and the growing suspicion that Captain Orrow may not have died when she left him.
Role in the story
Marra is the party's gateway into FreeHold's rumor economy and the reluctant keeper of a hidden plot beneath the Salt-Stained Saint. She can provide shelter, social leverage, and a plausible escape route while serving as a moral test. The party may need to earn her trust, expose the harbor authority's corruption, protect the neighborhood from criminals seeking the sealed object, or decide whether to help Marra find the sister she believes is dead.

- Faction
- Publicly independent; privately allied with FreeHold's dockworkers, the Lantern Street mutual-aid network, and several retired privateers. She has an uneasy information exchange with Harbor Watch Officer Sella Durn.
