Appearance
Mara Vell looks like someone the room has already underestimated and regretted it. Their face is narrow and wind-bitten, with permanent shadows under the eyes and a nose that has been broken at least twice. Their hands are strong, scarred, and always busy, moving with the calm efficiency of a person who has spent years surviving on short sleep and long tempers. They wear the tired posture of an exhausted innkeeper, but there is nothing slow about the way they turn at a sound. The strangest thing about Mara is how immaculate their apron stays, even after a night of spilled ale, soot, and blood. It is always pale, folded clean, and pinned with a silver key shaped like a fish.
“Low, clipped, and gravelly, with a voice that can cut through tavern noise like a bell knife..”

Distinguishing Features
A silver fish-shaped key pinned to the apron
A jagged scar across the left knuckle from a cellar knife fight
An ear cuff made from a bent coin
A faint aroma of cloves, smoke, and old ale that never quite leaves them
One sleeve permanently stained with black ink from years of ledger work
Voice
“Dry, steady, and cutting when pressed, with a surprisingly warm tone for the frightened and the hungry.”
Clothing
A patched charcoal shirt, rolled sleeves, a heavy dark apron with hidden pockets, soft boots suited to silent cellar steps, and a brass ring of keys worn at the hip
Body Language
Still as a knife on the bar when listening, then suddenly precise and brisk when action is needed. Their head tilts slightly to one side when they are reading a person, and their fingers drum only when they are deeply worried.
