Appearance
Rulen Marr looks carved out of bad weather and long responsibility. He is broad-shouldered in a way that suggests endurance rather than strength, with a soldier's straight back that never fully relaxes, even when seated. His skin is windburned and salt-flecked, his hands thick with old scars and cracked calluses. He keeps his dark hair cut short at the sides, though the top is threaded with iron-gray and usually flattened by rain or helmet wear. One eyebrow is split by a narrow white scar, and his left ear is slightly missing at the tip. The strangest thing about him is that he wears a small, carefully polished brass bird brooch on his cloak, an almost delicate ornament against his otherwise battered gate-master's gear. He moves with deliberate economy, as if every step should have a purpose, but his eyes are always in motion, counting exits, faces, and distances.
“Low and economical, with clipped consonants and a habit of ending sentences like commands. He does not waste words, but when he cares, his voice softens around names and numbers.”

Distinguishing Features
A split eyebrow scar that gives him a permanent look of suspicion.
A polished brass bird brooch that looks too delicate for a gate captain and is tied to his dead mother.
A left ear with a missing tip from a winter raid.
Hands scarred in bands around the palms from hauling chain winches and rope burns.
A habit of standing slightly angled, as if always ready to absorb a blow from the gate side.
Voice
“Gravelly, restrained, and unexpectedly gentle when speaking to the injured or the very young.”
Clothing
A thick dark-green gate coat with patched elbows, an iron-buckled leather harness for keys and signal cords, heavy boots scarred by stone dust, and a raincloak lined with faded convoy tags sewn inside the hem. He wears a tarnished gate captain's gorget on duty and keeps his gloves tucked into his belt when off watch.
Body Language
Still as a nailed board when listening, then suddenly all motion when action is needed. He points with two fingers instead of one, and taps his thumb against his belt buckle when thinking.
