Orin Brassvale
Untrained Engineer
Orin Brassvale
Species
Rock gnome
Appearance
Orin is a thumb-sized storm of motion with copper-brown skin, a narrow face, and enormous green eyes magnified by cracked circular lenses. His beard is clipped short on one side and allowed to grow into a tangled brass-threaded braid on the other. He walks with a forward hunch, as if forever leaning into a stubborn machine, and his boots click with tiny pressure valves. His hands are permanently darkened by oil, but his fingernails are painted with delicate blue enamel. The unexpected contradiction is that beneath his stained work coat he wears an immaculate cream waistcoat embroidered with tiny wildflowers, a gift from his late daughter.
“Quick, precise, and crowded with technical metaphors. Orin's voice rises when he is excited and drops to a whisper when discussing the forest.”

Distinguishing Features
One cracked magnifying lens permanently attached to his left spectacles.
A beard braid threaded with copper wire and a single blue bead from his daughter.
Oil-darkened fingertips contrasted by blue-painted fingernails.
Boots that click and hiss softly whenever he walks.
A faint smell of cedar smoke, river water, and hot metal clinging to his clothing.
Voice
“A warm, rasping tenor with a metallic undertone from years spent near boilers. He sounds as though every sentence is being assembled under pressure.”
Clothing
A soot-black work coat patched with green cloth, copper buttons, leather tool loops, knee-high boots fitted with tiny pressure valves, fingerless gloves, and an immaculate cream waistcoat embroidered with blue wildflowers.
Body Language
Orin constantly rolls a brass gear between his fingers, taps his heels in uneven rhythms, and angles his body toward the nearest exit or workbench. When challenged about the engine, he becomes very still except for his eyes. When discussing Maribel or his daughter, his shoulders soften and his hands lose their mechanical precision.
