The Rite of the Returning Root
You enter a circular temple chamber of black basalt slick with condensation. Four shallow basins surround a low altar, each painted with a different stage of plant life: root, bloom, wilt, and seed. A cracked mural depicts a serpent, moth, stag, and crow passing through those stages while hooded figures kneel beneath them. Green fire burns without heat in iron bowls, filling the room with the smell of wet soil and bitter herbs. The altar's copper spiral pulses whenever anyone touches a token, and somewhere behind the walls a slow heartbeat answers.
