Contextual Narrative

The Hammer and the Bell

Waterdeep knows how to make a spectacle out of danger. Lanterns blaze over the docks, wagers change hands in whispered clumps, and the roar from the arena carries through the city like thunder under stone. The Rumble in the Deep is almost upon you, and every alley between tavern and tournament house seems to be crowded with hopeful challengers, hired muscle, and creatures too strange to have arrived by ordinary means.

A notice nailed beside the arena gates

No blood feud shall be settled outside the ring—unless you have the coin, the witnesses, and the nerve.

Enemy Presence

The Bellmaw of Deep Rumble

A chained arena monstrosity, bred from a harbor-bull and a drowned elemental, turned into the showpiece of a Waterdeep fighting competition. Its bell-core can be soothed, stolen, or shattered, and the resonance of Brok's stolen hammer Vorundr may awaken memories that link the beast to the figure from Brok's past.

Quest Objectives

Win entry to The Rumble in the Deep and uncover who truly has the strongest claim to Vorundr before the championship bouts begin.

The party gains access to the arena’s inner circles, learns the rival’s leverage, and can shape the final contest through honest combat, a legal challenge, or a negotiated settlement.
If the party ignores the event, the brackets advance without them, Brok’s rival gains public sympathy or legal standing, and the hammer dispute hardens into a citywide scandal or a violent backstage ambush.

Investigate the organizer, the returning figure from Brok’s past, and the monster handlers to determine whether the competition is being manipulated for profit or revenge.

The party can expose a scam, prevent the monster from being used as a weapon, or redirect blame onto the real conspirators, opening a nonlethal path to victory.
If they arrive too late or choose only to watch, the monster may be unleashed in a crowded bout, creating casualties and making every faction blame someone else.

Decide whether to keep Vorundr, return it, or bargain it away while preserving Brok’s honor and the party’s standing in Waterdeep.

The party chooses from multiple endings: restitution, public duel, strategic betrayal, or a hard-fought victory that secures fame and influence.
If the party delays, Brok’s relationship to Vorundr becomes public before they can control the story, and the crowd decides the hammer’s fate for them.
