Recipe: Dungeon Floor
The stair descends beneath a monastery that has been abandoned for generations, its lower halls drowned in ink-dark water. The air smells of wet stone, old incense, and metal left too long beneath the earth. Faded murals show robed wardens lowering a great bronze bell into the depths, while every corridor bears the same final warning scratched into the walls: do not let it ring. Somewhere below, a bell tolls without moving, and the sound seems to vibrate through the characters’ teeth rather than reach their ears. The monastery’s guardians did not flee so much as become part of the place. A pale figure still patrols the flooded halls, dragging chains through the water and repeating a ritual no living priest remembers. Deeper still waits the thing they tried to imprison: a spirit wrapped in bronze, drowned prayer, and stolen voices. The floor is slowly filling as the seal fails, forcing intruders to choose between searching the abandoned side chambers for the tools of salvation and racing toward the crypt before the entire level becomes a resonant tomb.
Inscription above the crypt gate
“When the bell is silent, the dead may sleep. When it rings, even stone remembers how to drown.”

The Drowned Bell Monastery is an abandoned sanctuary carved around a sacred bronze bell and now half-submerged by black groundwater. Its evacuated chambers still hold relics, records, and warnings, while a failing seal allows the bound spirit below to influence the entire floor. The safest route leads from the cracked stairwell through flooded halls and guarded portcullises to the bell crypt.

A subterranean spirit fused with a sacred bronze bell, the abbot’s corpse, and the drowned remains of an entire monastery. The Bell-Eater weaponizes prayer, vibration, collapsing masonry, and rising blackwater while guarding the bell crypt that anchors its existence.

A drowned monastery guardian whose disciplined patrol has been twisted into a predatory ritual by blackwater from the bell crypt.

The failing seal beneath the bell causes invisible vibrations to pulse through the dungeon. Each pulse disturbs the blackwater, awakens dormant wards, and produces whispered echoes from the drowned monks.
At irregular intervals, creatures in the dungeon must succeed on a Constitution save or become rattled until the end of their next turn; sound-based effects are amplified, while silence or sound-dampening magic suppresses the pulses locally.
