Contextual Narrative

The Three Taps Tangle

In the soot-stained heart of the Lower Cogwheel district, three taverns stand in a tense triangle around a singular, sulfur-smelling well. This is Three Taps Square, a microcosm of the Iron City’s chaotic hierarchy. To the north, the 'Gilded Chalice' caters to guild lieutenants and social-climbing merchants with watered-down wine and high prices. Opposite it, the 'Rust Bucket' roars with the rhythmic clinking of dwarven hammers and the gravelly songs of dockworkers. Tucked into the shadows of a sagging alleyway is the 'Blind Rat,' a place where questions go to die and the city's underbelly breathes. The air here is a thick cocktail of coal smoke, expensive perfume, and the sour tang of spilt ale. Between the buildings, Ironhearth Forgings pumps rhythmic heat into the street, while City Watch patrols eye the crowds with practiced apathy—or a hand out for a bribe. It is a place of constant movement, where a nobleman might lose his purse and a beggar might find his fortune, provided they both know which door to enter and which shadows to avoid.

Old Barnaby, the soot-blinded street-sweeper

In this square, you can drink like a king or drown like a rat. The choice is only five paces apart, but the distance between the two is a lifetime of debt.

Tavern

The Rust Bucket

The tavern features no chairs; patrons sit on upturned barrels or repurposed stone blocks. Every time a new keg is tapped, Hagar strikes a massive suspended gear with a sledgehammer, causing the whole room to vibrate.

The Gilded Chalice

A massive, jagged crack runs through the western wall. Julian has covered it with an expensive but moth-eaten tapestry of the Royal Coronation that billows whenever the neighbor, Hagar, hammers on the other side.

The Blind Rat

The tavern is entirely windowless and stays humid regardless of the season. Gromm uses a series of rhythmic knocks on the counter to communicate costs or warnings to his regulars.

Ironhearth Forgings

Elara is visibly sleep-deprived and constantly rubs her temples whenever someone shouts at the Rust Bucket tavern next door. She will grant a 15 percent discount to anyone who successfully convinces the tavern crowd to quiet down or settles the ongoing 'Tavern War' involving the local guilds.

Settlement

Aethelgard

Aethelgard is a landscape of grey stone and blackened timber, perpetually shrouded in a thick smog known as the Ghost Fog. Above the soot, the spires of noble estates pierce the clouds, while below, the city is a labyrinth of tiered streets, roaring factories, and crowded slums. It is a place where wealth is built on the backs of the desperate, and the gears of progress never stop grinding.

Quest Objectives

Prevent the brewing 'Tavern War' from escalating into arson between the Rust Bucket and the Gilded Chalice.

The players identify the instigators and broker a temporary truce, earning favor with the Merchants' Guild.
A massive fire breaks out, destroying half the block and leading to the arrest of the players as suspected agitators.

Smuggle a shipment of 'Salted Cod' (stolen debt-records) from the Blind Rat to the city docks without Captain Vane noticing.

The debt records are destroyed, freeing dozens of families and earning the party a powerful contact in the black market.
The players are caught by Vane, resulting in a hefty fine or a sentence in the Debtor's Prison.
