The Tide That Remembers
The waterways of the Green Islands do not hold still. At low tide, black mud glistens beneath the mangrove roots, revealing crab holes, boat scars, and old footprints that vanish when the water returns. At high tide, the sea rises through the trees, turning every root into a half-submerged bridge and every narrow channel into a choice. Rain comes suddenly, drumming on broad leaves and flattening the world into gray curtains of water and fog. Somewhere beyond the veil, something large rolls beneath the surface. Somewhere above, a shrill cry answers from the canopy. Among the largest mangroves, old caches tempt the eye: rope loops hidden under bark, sealed jars wedged in root hollows, and faded marks left by travelers who never returned. An abandoned campsite leans into the mud beside a rotting canoe, its cooking pot still blackened from a long-quenched fire. The wary tide guide who knows these channels claims the caches were not meant to be found, and the creatures that now defend them seem to agree. Adventurers may pole silently through the fog, bargain with the islander, lure the predators away, climb into the storm-lashed canopy, or simply wait for the tide to reveal what the mangroves have swallowed.
Marra-of-the-Tides, island guide
“When the roots show silver, turn back. The sea is counting its dead, and it does not like strangers taking names from the trees.”

The Breathing Tide
The mangrove channels breathe with the tide. Water surges through roots, fog thickens over exposed mud, and familiar passages become dead ends or submerged tunnels within minutes.
Every exploration turn, the DM may shift water levels: at low tide, movement across mud is difficult but hidden tracks and caches are exposed; at high tide, swimming and climbing hazards increase, and Wisdom (Survival) checks to navigate are made with disadvantage unless guided by the tide guide.
