Contextual Narrative

The Salt-Cracked Heart of Marrowport

Marrowport clings to the bleached-white limestone cliffs like a stubborn barnacle. Above the churning turquoise waves, streets paved with pulverized sea-shell shimmer under a perpetual veil of sea mist. To the east, the Great Bone Arch towers over the harbor—a colossal fossilized rib of a forgotten leviathan that serves as the city’s natural gateway and a reminder of the ancient powers lying beneath the tides. The air here is thick with the scent of brine, spices, and the metallic tang of leviathan-bone being sawn in the artisan districts. While the wealthy merchant-princes toast to rising profits in their cliffside manors, a nervous energy ripples through the docks. Ships are arriving ghost-drifting and crewless, and the lighthouse has begun flickering in patterns that no mariner can decode.

Captain Thorne of the Empty Net

The sea doesn't just take what it wants; it keeps what it finds. Lately, it's been finding far too many of us.

Settlement

Marrowport

Built directly into a crescent of bleached sea-cliffs, Marrowport is a marvel of maritime engineering and architectural desperation. The city climbs from the Silt, where buildings on stilts endure daily flooding, up to the Marrow, a dense market district carved into the rock. Finally, the Crown looms above, where the elite inhabit manors supported by massive whale ribs. The constant grinding of the city bone-mills provides the lime used to reinforce the crumbling cliffs against the Narrow Sea.

Key Personas

High Admiral Valerius Thorne

High Admiral Valerius Thorne

Valerius is a study in controlled collapse. To the merchants of Marrowport, he is a tireless guardian of commerce who is generous with those who follow maritime law but merciless to the point of cruelty with those who bypass his tariffs. Internally, he is a man besieged. He treats his staff with fatherly affection one moment and screams of treachery the next. He is a master of logistics who can no longer sleep unless the windows are boarded shut against the sound of the waves. His loyalty to the city is his anchor, yet his growing madness makes him see every citizen as a potential spy for the 'Singers' beneath the docks.

Madam Elara Vaelentis

Madam Elara Vaelentis

Elara is a master of the double-edged compliment. She is deeply generous to those she views as 'investments' but ruthlessly exploitative of her own kin, whom she sees as competitors for her legacy. She possesses a razor-sharp wit and a memory that never forgets a slight or a debt. In public, she is the pinnacle of civic grace, but in private meetings, she uses silence as a weapon to force her visitors into babbling their secrets out of nervousness.

Kaelen O'Malley

Kaelen O'Malley

Kaelen is eerily soft-spoken and prone to long silences where he seems to be listening to something underwater. He is obsessively protective of any books or paper he finds, treating them with a reverence that borders on religious mania. While he is deeply compassionate toward other survivors of tragedies, he becomes violently agitated and catatonic at the mention of the High Admiral. He views the world as a thin crust floating over a vast, infinite library that is slowly rising to reclaim its lost volumes.
