To a Veilborn, home is not a place but a promise that can be carried, defended, and sometimes rediscovered. They make excellent guides, negotiators, scouts, and reluctant heroes, especially when an ordinary road begins leading somewhere impossible.

Veilborn are humanoids whose bodies bear subtle signs of otherworldly origin. Their skin may show faint gradients like dusk beneath the surface, their eyes often reflect light from the wrong angle, and their hair ranges from ordinary black, brown, and blond to smoky gray, moss green, or translucent white. Most have compact, balanced builds suited to travel, though individual lineages vary greatly in stature. Their shadows may lag a heartbeat behind, point toward a remembered home, or blur at the edges when they are tired. These effects are usually mild and rarely interfere with daily life.

Veilborn society is organized around hearth-circles, traveling houses, and route-kin. A hearth-circle may include relatives, apprentices, adopted outsiders, and the ghosts of former residents. Children are taught to identify safe thresholds, recognize false landmarks, and leave a place without damaging its story. Their strongest social virtue is reliable passage, meaning the ability to get someone or something safely from one state to another. Their festivals mark migrations, reconciliations, and the reopening of roads after long silence. Disputes are often settled through guided walks, in which each side must show the other the places that shaped their position.

Veilborn religion is practical and intimate. Most honor the Keeper of Crossings, a collective title for ancestors, household spirits, and unknown guardians believed to watch over passage between places. Offerings are left at gates and crossroads rather than grand temples. Their traditions favor balance, hospitality, and personal responsibility, but no alignment is considered mandatory. A lawful Veilborn may preserve ancient routes, while a chaotic one may open paths that tradition forbids.

Veilborn homelands cling to the edges of reality: forests that grow beneath unfamiliar stars, islands suspended over endless cloud, ruined cities reflected in still water, and borderlands where two seasons occupy the same street. Their architecture favors courtyards, covered bridges, movable walls, and windows that open onto carefully chosen views. A home is not defined by its foundation but by the number of safe entrances it offers. Doors are painted with family marks, while lintels bear small offerings of salt, thread, bells, or bread for travelers who may not be entirely alive.

Veilborn are often welcomed as guides, storytellers, and traders, but their unfamiliar customs can inspire suspicion. They are sometimes mistaken for spirits, changelings, or emissaries of dangerous powers. Veilborn communities tend to form close partnerships with isolated villages, traveling companies, and scholars of planar geography. They respect ordinary folk who keep their promises and distrust institutions that claim ownership over roads, borders, or knowledge.
