The Last Lantern
The Last Lantern was built from the remains of a waystation after the main road shifted away and the surrounding farms failed one by one. The first settlers were people who had nowhere else to go: discharged soldiers, disgraced officials, debtors, fugitives from feuds, failed merchants, and families fleeing the consequences of someone else's choices. They agreed that the settlement would offer shelter before judgment, though nobody pretended that old trouble could be left entirely behind. The tavern became the first permanent structure around the public well and gradually turned into the settlement's social heart. Its alternate names, The Far Hearth and Second Chances, are still used by older residents, though The Last Lantern is the name painted above the door.
