The Shimmering Expanse
A vast stretch of coastal mudflats and salt marshes where the receding tide reveals vibrant patches of phosphorescent blue and violet algae. During the day, it appears as a standard, grey wetland littered with salt-crusted driftwood, but at night, the bioluminescence creates a mirror image of the starry sky on the ground.

The Shimmering Expanse
Ethereal and disorienting. The air smells of salt, damp earth, and a faint metallic tang like ozone. A low hum vibrates through the ground as the tides shift.

Pragmatic and stern. Elias views the expanse as a dangerous job site rather than a wonder. He is constantly checking his pocket watch against the tidal charts.
History
Tidal Rhythms and Teleportation
The Expanse functions on a strict cycle. At low tide, the algae is most active. A creature standing in a pool of bioluminescence can use their movement to teleport to any other visible luminous pool within 60 feet. This requires a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw; on a failure, the traveler arrives but is stunned until the end of their next turn as their senses recalibrate.
Hazards of the Midnight Tide
The water rises rapidly and unpredictably. When the tide comes in, the flats become difficult terrain. During the night, 1d4 Water Weirds patrol the deeper channels. They have advantage on Stealth checks while in the glowing water and will attempt to grapple travelers and pull them into the mud.
Alchemical Properties
The rare algae found here is a key component for Potions of Invisibility and Oil of Etherealness. A character can spend 1 hour harvesting a vial of the essence with a successful DC 15 Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) or Intelligence (Nature) check. However, harvesting more than three vials draws the ire of the Luminous Sprites who inhabit the area.

A mischievous Luminous Sprite who offers to guide travelers across the flats in exchange for 'shiny sounds' or iron nails.
A weathered human woman with stained hands who knows exactly which algae patches are safe for teleportation and which ones are acidic.
Rumors & Plot Hooks
- 1.The ghost of a captain still haunts the sunken wreck, guarding a chest of 'moon-gold'.
- 2.Stepping into a pool of green light instead of blue will transport you straight to the Feywild.
- 3.The Water Weirds that hunt at night are actually the transformed spirits of drowned poachers.
Classified Entry
The bioluminescent algae is a semi-sentient hive mind that slowly absorbs the memories of those who utilize its teleportation nodes, storing them in the glowing silt below.
