The Steam-Chasm Bridge

The air is thick with the smell of sulfur and wet iron; a constant, low-frequency hum vibrates through the soles of anyone crossing, punctuated by the shrieking hiss of escaping pressure.

History

Constructed forty years ago to link the residential residential heights with the smelting district, the bridge has become a symbol of the station's grit and decaying infrastructure.

The Blow-Off Cycle

Once every hour, the bridge vents scalding steam from the chasm floor. All creatures on the bridge must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 8d6 fire damage from the heat, or half as much on a success. The area becomes heavily obscured for 3 rounds after the vent.

Maintenance Catwalks

A network of narrow, rusted walkways hangs beneath the main deck. These are used by technicians but serve as a dangerous, hidden route for those wishing to avoid the guard-manned toll booths at either end.

Tolls and Regulations

Crossing the bridge costs one silver piece per pedestrian and five silver per pack animal. Wagons weighing over two tons are strictly prohibited unless a heavy-lift permit is purchased from the Overseer for ten gold pieces.

Leaky Pip Bridge Guide

A nimble urchin who has memorized the exact timing of the steam cycles and knows which planks are likely to snap.

Sergeant Hallow Watch Commander

A cynical veteran who strictly enforces the bridge tolls and ignores the structural groans of the iron joints.

Rumors & Plot Hooks

  1. 1.The pressure is building because the furnace elementals in the station core are growing restless.
  2. 2.A local merchant dropped a lockbox of gems near the south pylon during the last venting and it is still stuck on a ledge.
  3. 3.The bridge vibrates in a secret code whenever the smuggling vessels pass beneath it at midnight.

Classified Entry

The venting system is being manually bypassed by the local Smelting Guild to dump toxic byproducts directly into the chasm floor, hiding the evidence of illegal ore processing.
