The Rite of Returning Green
Read Aloud
The moonwell shudders as red-green light races through the roots. Silver pollen hangs in the air, and the shard answers every breath with a pulse of pain. The grove spirits step from the standing stones, watching to see whether you heal this place or claim it.

NPC Goal
The Unquiet Grove Spirits want the shard freed without losing the grove's remaining life, but they fear that mortals will take its power and leave the roots to die.
Leverage
The party can offer a promise to restore the grove, sacrifice a treasured memory, or redirect the shard's power into the moonwell.
Player Approaches
- Name a living thing the party has saved.
- Pour moonwell water over the shard.
- Turn a standing stone toward the oldest tree.
- Confess a painful truth without blaming another character.
NPC Gambits
- Assign one character to lead the ritual while others stabilize a stone or block a root channel.
- Answer the spirits' questions with a specific memory, not a broad promise.
- Use Nature to guide the roots, Religion to calm the spirits, or Arcana to separate the shard from the corruption.
- Let the shard echo a character's pain, then answer with a chosen action in the present.
NPC Reactions
- On a success, the spirits quiet one root channel and reveal the next standing stone.
- On a clever sacrifice, the spirits grant advantage on the next ritual check.
- On a vague promise, the spirits demand a concrete name, deed, or cost.
- On a failure, the Shard Echo repeats a character's worst doubt in a familiar voice.
- If the party tries to seize the shard, the spirits become HOSTILE and trigger the next complication immediately.
