NPC Goal
Keep the bridge safe, collect what he is owed, and avoid blame if the crossing fails.
Leverage
The keeper needs help fixing the bridge more than he wants the toll.
Player Approaches
- Offer to repair the broken wheel or loose plank.
- Pay the toll in coin, labor, or supplies.
- Name the roadmaster or local lord to force a change in tone.
- Show that the flood makes delay dangerous for everyone.
NPC Gambits
- Make a plain appeal to duty.
- Use a promise of help as bait.
- Catch him in a contradiction about the ledger or the flood.
- Intimidate him by putting someone on the near bank and someone on the far bank.
NPC Reactions
- Wary, then relieved if someone mentions the broken plank first.
- Snaps if the party talks over him or reaches for the chain.
- Softens fast if the party offers practical help.
