Heartbeat Crucible
The Heartbeat Crucible is a battlefield hazard formed when a powerful relic, battlefield sacrifice, or wounded demigod tries to incarnate through the emotions of nearby combatants. It feeds on fear, pain, and determination, synchronizing the battlefield to a violent pulse. The hazard is not merely a trap. It changes the tempo of the encounter, rewards movement and observation, and forces combatants to decide whether to destroy, stabilize, or exploit the heart.

“A colossal, translucent membrane stretches across the battlefield like a half-formed heart. It pulses with crimson light, each beat sending ripples through the ground. Veins of luminous energy connect it to shattered stones, fallen weapons, and anyone who has bled nearby.”
Standard Engagement
The hazard activates when a creature enters the central battlefield or when three or more creatures within 60 feet take damage during the same round.
The Crucible emits a pulse. Each creature within 60 feet of the membrane attempts a DC 29 Fortitude save against Crushing Pulse. After the pulse, one active battlefield vein flares. The first time a vein flares each round, creatures within 10 feet of that vein must attempt the same save. The hazard chooses the vein with the greatest number of creatures within 10 feet. If no vein has creatures nearby, it chooses randomly.
The Crucible resets at the start of each round unless it is suppressed or all three veins are severed. If destroyed, it does not reset. If all veins are severed, the membrane reforms after 1 minute unless a character succeeds at a DC 32 Religion, Nature, or Occultism check during that minute.
The Crucible's pulse strikes every creature in the battlefield aura. A creature can attempt a DC 29 Fortitude save. On a critical success, the creature is unaffected. On a success, it takes half damage and is not pushed. On a failure, it takes 4d10 bludgeoning damage and is pushed 10 feet away from the membrane. On a critical failure, it takes double damage, is pushed 20 feet, and falls prone.
A creature that fails its save against Crushing Pulse is marked by a red sigil until the end of its next turn. While marked, it takes a -1 circumstance penalty to saves against the Heartbeat Crucible. If it fails another save against the Crucible while marked, it becomes frightened 1, or increases its frightened value by 1 on a critical failure.
When the membrane is destroyed, it releases one final pulse. Each creature within 60 feet attempts a DC 29 Reflex save, taking 6d10 force damage on a failure, half damage on a success, and double damage on a critical failure. A creature that critically succeeds is unaffected.
The battlefield aura extends 60 feet from the membrane. The Crucible cannot affect creatures outside this aura, though its pulse can be heard and seen from much farther away.
The Crucible begins with three active veins. Each severed vein reduces the hazard's Crushing Pulse damage by 1d10 and reduces its push distance by 5 feet. When the last vein is severed, the hazard becomes inert for 1 minute.
A creature that deliberately moves at least 20 feet during its turn gains a +1 circumstance bonus to its next save against Crushing Pulse before the start of its next turn. A creature that ends its turn within 10 feet of the membrane takes a -1 circumstance penalty to that save.
When the Deathbeat occurs, each severed vein releases a harmless flash instead of contributing to the final pulse. If all three veins were severed, Deathbeat does not occur.
