Appearance
Varkesh Root-Sunder is a narrow, fox-faced man who looks half carved from river driftwood and half stitched together from swamp refuse. His skin is bark-brown with pale green veining that shows through at the wrists and throat like sap trapped under thin wood. One shoulder rides higher than the other, and he moves with a careful, almost ceremonial limp, as if every step is being measured against some private ritual. His hair hangs in ropey black strands threaded with dried moss, while a single white braid, impossibly neat, is tied with a strip of cured birch bark behind his left ear. His left eye is a bright, unsettling amber, but the right eye is clouded milk white and never blinks, giving him the contradictory look of a graveyard saint in a beggar's coat. He smells faintly of wet earth, bitter herbs, and smoke from damp wood that refuses to catch.
“Measured, soft, and intimate, with long pauses that feel like he is listening to something just behind the listener's ear. He rarely raises his voice, and when he does it sounds more frightened than angry.”

Distinguishing Features
A root-shaped scar climbs from his jaw to behind his right ear
His clouded right eye never blinks
His fingertips are stained nearly black with permanent herb dyes
A knot of tiny living fungi blooms and vanishes at the nape of his neck when he is angry
He wears a birch bark token tied to his wrist, turned inward so only he can read the carving
Voice
“Low, rasped, and contemplative, with a faint wetness to the consonants as though every word has passed through mud before reaching the air.”
Clothing
A patched ash-gray robe layered over leather strips, with a bark-fiber sash, seed pouches at the waist, and a hood lined in shed crow feathers. The cuffs and hem are stained green-black from sap and swamp water.
Body Language
Stillness comes naturally to him, but when he is planning or lying his fingers constantly knead invisible soil against his thumb pads. He tilts his head toward roots, floorboards, and corpses as if receiving whispered instructions.
