Calen Valthorn is a lean, weathered human with the wiry strength of someone who has spent decades hauling sacks, pruning trees, and sleeping outdoors. His skin is sun-browned and marked by pale lines that resemble tiny branching roots. His movements are careful and economical, yet when startled he becomes startlingly fast, darting sideways like a fox. He leaves the impression of a tired country merchant until one notices that moths settle on his shoulders without fear and that the shadows beneath his shelves seem to lean toward him. The unexpected contradiction is his immaculate hands: despite his work with soil, sap, and compost, his fingernails are always clean and polished.
