Appearance
Merric Vale looks carved from weathered riverstone and old worry, a tall, stooped man with bark-rough hands, peat under his nails, and a gait that is half guard drill and half swamp-heron stalk. His coat is a patched marsh-green sentinel's mantle lined with fox fur at the collar, but the hem is always damp as if he has just stepped from a reed bed. A cracked brass badge hangs beside a string of dried willow knots and tiny glass beads that chime softly when he moves. His left eyebrow is silvered and bushy, his right cheek is crossed by a pale, shiny scar that seems too clean to be accidental. The unexpected detail is the bouquet of pressed wildflowers he keeps tucked inside his breast pocket, carefully replaced each dawn as if he were still courting someone.
“Low, measured, and gravel-rough, with an old watchman's cadence that turns unexpectedly soft when he speaks of birds, weather, or children..”

Distinguishing Features
A clean scar across his right cheek that never quite matches the rest of his skin
A broken brass whistle that produces a low croak instead of a note
Willow-knotted prayer cords wrapped around his wrist
Mud-stained boots that never seem to dry
A habit of carrying fresh wildflowers hidden inside his coat
Voice
“Warm but worn, like a lantern burning in a damp room”
Clothing
A patched sentinel coat over layered wool and leather, knee-high mud boots with reed bindings, fingerless gloves, and a belt hung with whistle, knife, pouch of herbs, and a folded map sealed in waxed cloth
Body Language
He stands with one hand behind his back like a sentry on duty, but his free hand constantly measures wind, mud depth, and distance as if the world itself were a report to file.
