Vela Sootvein
Mine Captain
Vela Sootvein
Species
Dwarf
Appearance
Vela Sootvein is a compact, broad-shouldered dwarf woman whose presence feels heavier than her height suggests. Her skin has the rough texture of kiln-fired clay, crossed by fine black lines where soot and mineral dust have settled permanently into old scars. She moves with a miner's economical rhythm, placing each foot as if testing the stability of the earth. Her left hand is wrapped in silver wire and leather, while her right arm is corded with burns that shimmer faintly whenever the corruption stirs. The unexpected thing about her is her immaculate smile, bright and almost delicate, which appears at the worst possible moments, especially when someone suggests abandoning the mine.
“Vela speaks in a low, deliberate voice, using short sentences and concrete images. She rarely raises her volume because miners learned to listen for her words through dust, stone, and machinery.”

Distinguishing Features
A black mineral vein runs from her left temple to the corner of her mouth and pulses faintly near corrupted magic.
Her left hand is wrapped in silver wire to restrain tremors caused by rune exposure.
She carries a brass miner's bell that rings only when the corruption is nearby.
Her smile is unnervingly warm during moments of extreme danger.
The names of six dead miners are tattooed across the inside of her right wrist.
Voice
“Low, smoky, and steady, with a faint rasp like iron dragged across slate. Her laugh is surprisingly bright and quick, vanishing almost as soon as it appears.”
Clothing
A soot-blackened canvas mining coat reinforced with overlapping copper plates, a faded red scarf tied around her neck, heavy leather trousers, iron-capped boots, and a belt crowded with chalk, wedges, rune tablets, wire, and tiny brass bells. Her coat is patched with scraps from the uniforms of miners who died under her command.
Body Language
Vela keeps her shoulders square and her chin lifted, but her left thumb constantly rubs the silver wire around her injured hand. She leans toward anyone speaking about the trapped crew and away from anyone advocating abandonment. When she lies, she smiles without showing her teeth.
