Brek is a compact gnome with a rain-slick, perpetual workshop sheen to him, as though he has just stepped out of a brass chimney. His clothes are immaculate in the odd way only a meticulous engineer can manage, but they are patched with tiny seams of emerald thread and soot-black leather. His fingers are long, clever, and nicked with a hundred old cuts, and he moves with quick, precise little darts followed by moments of complete stillness, like a gear deciding whether to catch. The strangest thing about him is his smile: warm and paternal, right beside a pair of weld-burn scars that make him look as if he has survived a small thunderstorm inside his own face.
