Commoner
Meriel Veyr-of-the-Last-Lantern
Species
Elf
Appearance
Meriel Veyr-of-the-Last-Lantern is a slender moon elf whose movements are quiet but never delicate. She walks with the measured rhythm of someone carrying a full bowl through a crowded room, even when her hands are empty. Her face is fine-boned and youthful, yet her expression often belongs to an exhausted grandmother. Thin silver scars cross her left palm in the shape of branching roots. She smells faintly of rain, lamp oil, and crushed mint. The unexpected contradiction is her smile, which is broad, gap-toothed, and cheerfully inelegant against her otherwise ethereal appearance.
“Her voice is low, clear, and gently musical, with an unexpectedly blunt rhythm. She speaks slowly when comforting someone and rapidly when explaining danger.”

Distinguishing Features
A silver root-shaped scar runs across her left palm.
Her brass lantern contains tiny paper slips bearing the names of people she has escorted to safety.
One of her pointed ears is notched from a wolf bite.
She has a gap between her front teeth and laughs louder than most elves consider dignified.
Her shadow sometimes raises its hand a heartbeat after she does.
Voice
“A contralto with a smoky warmth, like a song heard through a wooden door during rain”
Clothing
A weather-stained green traveling coat patched with scraps of old banners, a cream linen shirt, dark knee-length trousers, soft riding boots, and a belt hung with tiny tools. A brass lantern engraved with hundreds of names hangs at her hip.
Body Language
Meriel tilts her head as though listening to a distant bell, keeps one hand near her staff, and studies people's shoes before their faces. When angry, she becomes perfectly still except for the slow tightening of her fingers around her lantern's handle.
