Appearance
Calista Varyn looks like a woman carved from weathered rosewood, compact and difficult to move once she plants her feet behind the bar. Her hands are broad, scarred, and permanently scented with juniper, smoke, and lemon peel. She moves with the silent balance of a dancer despite a slight limp in her left leg, and she can cross a crowded tavern without spilling a drop from a full tray. Her smile is warm enough to invite confidence, but her eyes measure every doorway and every pair of hands. The unexpected contradiction is her laugh, which is enormous, unrestrained, and startlingly girlish, completely at odds with her watchful, knife-quiet presence.
“Her voice is low, dry, and musical, with a river-district accent softened by years of serving wealthy travelers. She speaks quickly when joking and painfully slowly when delivering a warning.”

Distinguishing Features
A thin white scar runs from the corner of her mouth to her jaw.
Her left leg is stiff after an old fire escape injury.
She wears a brass ring shaped like a closed eye.
Her fingernails are stained permanently blue from a failed attempt to develop invisible ink.
She has a small tattoo of three falling stars behind her right ear.
Voice
“A husky alto with a warm laugh, a sharp conversational rhythm, and a frighteningly calm whisper when she is angry.”
Clothing
A charcoal waistcoat over a cream linen shirt, reinforced trousers, soft leather boots, and a dark green apron stitched with tiny silver tankards. A red silk ribbon is tied around her left wrist, though she claims not to know where it came from.
Body Language
Calista leans toward people when they speak, as if offering trust, but her shoulders remain angled toward the nearest weapon or exit. When threatened, she becomes unnaturally still, with one thumb resting against the ring on her left hand.
