Zyra Nightshade is a narrow-shouldered human woman with the alert stillness of a hunting heron. Her skin has a warm umber tone dusted with permanent freckles of charcoal and blue-black ink. She moves quietly but never softly, each step measured as if crossing a floor covered in sleeping glass. Her fingers are stained at the cuticles, and the faint smell of cedar oil, lamp smoke, and iron-gall ink follows her through every room. At first glance she seems severe and nocturnal, yet she wears a small necklace of bright yellow children's beads beneath her collar, an unexpectedly cheerful keepsake from the orphan she once protected.
