Merva Steelbraid

Merva Steelbraid
Species
Dwarf
Appearance
Merva Steelbraid is a compact, broad-shouldered dwarf with the dense, grounded presence of a millstone. Her hands are scarred, blackened around the nails, and permanently warm from years beside the forge. She moves with a slight forward lean, as though still bracing against the force of an unseen hammer blow, yet her footwork is surprisingly quiet. Her beard is absent, but two thick braids of iron-gray hair descend from her temples and are woven together at the back with thin copper wire. Her face is stern at first glance, softened by laugh lines and one expressive eyebrow that rises whenever someone lies. The unexpected contradiction is her delicate left hand, which is capable of engraving letters so fine that they resemble spiderwebs on polished steel.
“Low, measured, and rasped slightly by years of forge smoke. Merva speaks in short, weighty sentences, using dwarven proverbs when discussing loyalty and precise measurements when discussing danger.”

Distinguishing Features
Two iron-gray temple braids joined with copper wire
A pale scar across her left palm in the shape of a jagged crescent
One eyebrow that rises dramatically whenever she detects a lie
A copper clasp shaped like a closed eye
Fingertips permanently stained dark by coal dust and metal polish
Voice
“A smoky contralto with a dry rasp, usually quiet enough that people must lean in. When she gives an order, the forge seems to become silent around it.”
Clothing
A soot-dark leather apron over a faded blue wool tunic, heavy trousers tucked into iron-capped boots, and a broad belt hung with tongs, chalk, a whetstone, and three carefully labeled keys. She wears a copper clasp shaped like a closed eye.
Body Language
Merva keeps her feet planted wide and her shoulders squared. She often folds one hand over the opposite wrist, concealing the tremor left by an old crushing injury. When someone earns her respect, she leans closer and lowers her head. When someone lies, her thumb begins tapping a steady rhythm against her palm.
