They shaped reality through argument, sacrifice, concealment, and accident, then withdrew beyond the visible heavens after binding themselves to a covenant that forbids direct rule.

The world hangs between the First Silence and the Last Silence, shaped when Asterion struck the void with a burning measure. Morvanna gave the measure substance, Caldris taught it law, Veyra introduced change, Nemeia concealed its deepest truths, and Orun gave mortal beings the power to choose what the gods had not predetermined. The pantheon is not a family but an assembly of incompatible principles bound by an ancient covenant.

The religion is a loose confederation called the Sixfold Accord. Each deity has independent temples, priesthoods, mysteries, and local traditions, but major sanctuaries maintain six shrines arranged around an empty central court. The central court symbolizes the gods’ withdrawal and is never occupied by a statue. Priests meet in seasonal conclaves to settle doctrinal disputes, interpret omens, and preserve the covenant forbidding direct divine rule. Initiates usually begin with one patron deity but are taught that no divine principle can be understood without studying at least two rivals.

Most societies recognize all six deities but favor different combinations. Temples are often built as distant compounds rather than unified cathedrals, with separate shrines connected by long roads or covered walkways. Priests commonly serve one deity while acknowledging the others in formal rites. Religious conflict usually concerns whether fate, justice, secrecy, change, compassion, or freedom should guide public life. Pilgrims are expected to visit at least three shrines before claiming spiritual maturity.

The dead pass into the Still Beyond, a silent realm divided into six distant horizons. A soul is drawn toward the deity whose values shaped its life, though no god fully possesses the dead. The worthy may become masked spirits in a deity’s retinue, while the forgotten dissolve into the pale memory beneath the world.
