Octopus Crest in the Rowboat

A narrow rowboat lies wedged among cypress roots and reed beds, its hull split but still lashed to a swollen post. Beneath the seat sits a black iron chest crusted with mud, stamped with an octopus crest whose eight tentacles wind around a trio of brass letter-dials. The swamp air is heavy with rot and brine, and whenever anyone turns a dial the chest answers with a faint wet click, as if something inside has been holding its breath.
