The Drowned Ballast Gate

The flooded chamber of the shipwreck opens like the belly of a whale, with ribs of splintered oak curving over a waist-deep pool that glitters green in the lantern light. Barnacled bronze pipes snake from the walls into a control dais shaped like a ship's wheel, three stiff valves, and a chain-fed ballast pin. Every wrong touch sends a shudder through the room, rattling loose coins, puffing trapped air, and making the water level rise or fall in tiny, ominous breaths, as if the ruin itself is listening.
