The Four Turns of the Winter Lens

The chamber is a circular observatory of brass ribs, pale stone, and cracked blue glass, with a waist-high mechanism set into a dais at the center. Four ringed dials surround a black lens socket, and each turn makes the room answer with a different sound: a bell note, a hiss of wind, a click like a latch, or a low settling rumble. Faded murals of spring wheat, summer fireflies, autumn leaves, and winter frost circle the walls, and when the rings are nearly aligned, starlight leaks through hidden seams in thin silver lines.
